Now this was awkward--so many people, so very little time. At least I knew I looked lonely, if anything, and I was still upright and coherent, so that was something. Besides, I'd had some water.

There were a few people I'd wanted to kiss, that was true, but...I could deal with someone else. Maybe.

"Woo! Happy New Year's!" said Elliot who, by that point, was very drunk. One rum and coke had turned into two which had turned into three which had turned into something weird with an umbrella in it.

Why do they put umbrellas in drinks anyway? Are they afraid they'll get wet? she wondered, then noticed who it was she was toasting.

"Oh! Hey, Remy! Sup? Is it kissing time yet?" Chuck was around here somewhere, she knew...

"Hey, Elliot!" I replied, for some reason kind of excited to see her. Not that I wouldn't be glad to see her usually, but more than usual. "Yeah, in maybe half a minute. Nice umbrella."

"Someone has an umbrella?" Elliot repeated, confused. "You shouldn't open them inside, they're bad luck and you could put an eye out - oh," she realized, looking at her drink. "You mean this. Thanks, I think. I don't even know what this drink is except it tastes very...tropical. It's probably a Sex on the Beach," she said. "I've never had Sex on the Beach, so I wouldn't know what it's like. Have you ever had Sex on the Beach?"

I was drunk enough to totally play with words like that. "I can't say I've had it, either way," I admitted. "Not such a fan of orange juice, or of getting sand in certain places."

Elliot gave her a blank look that mimes would have envied.

"What?"

"Sex on the beach," I said, and tried not to laugh. "Or Sex on the Beach. Haven't had either."

And I leaned in and kissed her chastely on the lips. "Happy New Year, Elliot?"

Elliot'd had experiences before, of course, back in college. And a couple in high school. But she definitely didn't expect to have one here.

Holy fricksticks! What the hell was that? she thought, her mouth open when Remy pulled away. And why didn't I entirely not like it?

"Um," she offered. "Yes. Happy New Lesbian. Year!" she amended hastily. "Happy New Year." She was beet red by that point.

I laughed, I couldn't help but laugh, because if she hadn't screamed at me for being a queer, then it was probably okay. "Bisexual, actually," I said. "But yeah, happy new year."

"Hey, Happy New Year!" says Mayko, seizing the moment. She's not drunk, just pleasantly warm, and raises her glass and smiles as the countdown reaches zero.

I'd never seen her before, but that was entirely cool, and I raised my glass to her and took a sip in toast. "Happy New Year!" I agreed, then leaned in and kissed her lightly, pretty much chaste.

As long as this is her New Year's kiss, Mayko's going to make it count, and presses in a little longer than just a peck. After all, 'tis the season and all. Okay, that's Christmas, but she thinks it can stretch to cover New Year's as well.

"I'm not being forward," she says afterwards, blushing slightly, "I'm just having a good night."

Well, why not--she was pretty, and names didn't matter as much as people said they did. I kissed her back, not going too far right then, but letting her set the ropes. "Hey, it's okay," I said, and gave her an honest smile. "You're allowed to have a good time."

Which meant 'well, kiss me again if you want.'

Mayko looks at her for a moment, then laughs softly. "I'm sorry," she says, chewing on her lip and then smiling again. That had definitely been a kiss back. "I'm Mayko."

"You don't have to apologize," I said, and offered her my free hand to shake. I needed to drink a little more water. "I'm Remy. Nice to meet you. In, uh, more ways than one."

Mayko laughs again, still pleasantly flushed. "It's nice to meet you too," she says. "I don't usually... but you were there and I was here, and... it seemed like a good idea at the time."
