NYE - First Party Post

If you had been upstairs in the Compound or in the Hub at six in the evening of December 31, you might have thought your eyes were playing tricks on you, or that you'd once again been whisked off to some strange, new place. Within the blink of an eye, the rooms had changed, sparkling instantly with festive decorations, and it was all so ( Read more... )

With the surprise heatwave at the start of the month, Karen knew better than to expect the same magic party for New Year's Eve, but she was prepared anyway. It was a chance to dress up for a bit and have some fun - and, most importantly, some way to get Nick and Warrick to cheer up, even if she had to resort to getting them both completely drunk to do so.

The whole half a table dedicated to chocolates and cakes of all kinds was a huge plus, too.

Coke. Coke with ice. Sweets was all over that. He got smashed against a woman and turned a sheepish smile toward her as he said, "Sorry. Quite a run on the food, huh?"

"Oh my gosh," Karen said, swallowing down a bite of a chocolate cake she'd finally decided on trying first. "Are you kidding? I don't blame them, junk food is hard to come by."

Even when you saved hard-earned magic Halloween candy, it never lasted as long.

"I had a Coke when I got here, but some woman named Jaye drank it like she hadn't had one in forever," he chuckled. "Come to find out, she really hadn't." He offered his hand, even though is was a little wet from the condensation on his glass. "I'm Lance. Doctor Lance Sweets."

"Nice to meet you, Doctor Sweets," Karen said, barely able to keep the amusement at his name out of her voice. "I'm Karen Filippelli. And yeah, you might as well take full advantage of anything you find here tonight. So you're kinda new, huh?"

"Yeah. Just about a month now," he said with a nod. "It's nice to meet you, Karen. What do you do around here?"

Small talk. Yes. Small talk was waht normal people did at parties.

Karen popped another small piece of cake in her mouth and looked over his shoulder as she pretended to think about it.

"I make bootleg alcohol, babysit my friend's kid, and I spend most of my days keeping my new puppy from peeing in my boyfriend's shoes." She nodded happily. "I think that about sums up my island life."

Sweets blinked a couple times before he had a tick of a nod. "Wow. That's a lot. I work in the psych office and avoid my room mates," he replied. "What sort of puppy?"

It wasn't so much work, really. Especially not after you came from a nine to five job trying to sell paper. "She's a mix of wolf, poodle and German Shepherd, I think. Kind of a handful, but it's nice having a pet."

"That's quite a mix. I've seen a lot of animals around," he mentioned, even though most of the time he just tried to ignore the behemoth Asher called a dog. "Where do they come from? I mean, are they like the snow and the people? Just showing up?"

"I think sometimes people randomly get pets, or their pets they knew at home, then..." she lowered her voice to an appropriate level of ominous sincerity, "they breed."

"They...oh," he said, balking a little. Of course they did. It wasn't just the pets, either, if the birth registry proved anything.

"Wow. Well, sure they do."

Karen couldn't help but grin at Lance's reaction. It was kind of adorable, and made her feel like she was picking on a newbie. "What about you? What are you doctor of?"

"Psychology," he replied, suddenly much more comfortable with the topic. "Behavioral analysis and clinical psychology. I worked for the FBI back home."

With the overabundance of doctors the island already had, Karen hadn't excepted that answer. "That is cool," she said, nodding in admiration. "And God, the psych office could use your help, I've heard."

"That's what I was told by Doctor Chase. He wasn't kidding. Without Doctor Deane, I'm afraid that a lot of people who need help have been relying on one another. Which there is nothing wrong with. I just mean that it's always good to have the training. The rest of the staff is great. I hope that being here takes some weight off their shoulders."

He had his own concerns about Jill, and Teyla would be having a baby. It would be nice if he could drum up a few more volunteers, but that was something for...not tonight.
