As much as Priestly started out looking at the Beach City Grill as just a means to an end, the place turned into his family and so these days he feels more at home behind a grill than not. Or if not a grill then, well, as close to it as he can get on the island. The Grill was always more of a lunch place, but Priestly cooks up a mean omelet when given half a chance, and after counting up the eggs he figures they can pull it off today.
"There's cheese, right?" he says to Jen, who's currently the one checking out the state of the fridge and pulling things out to set on the counter. "Maybe a whole new wheel of it?"
"As a matter of fact," Jen says, as she reaches into the depths of the fridge, "there is. It looks like cheddar, too." She holds it up for Priestly to see, then adds it to the pile of ingredients she's gathering for them to use as choices for omelette fillings. She's glad they decided to take on a kitchen shift, since it makes her feel like she's actually contributing something to the little island community instead of just taking up space. And after working at the Grill, they're both used to cooking on a large scale, even if back home it was a lot more spread out.
Jen takes out a couple more things, then surveys what she's got. "With all these veggies and the seafood and other meat, people will have plenty to choose from for their omelette," she observes.
Priestly stares at it for a minute, then tries to gather as much as he can in his arms to carry over to the waiting stove, and the waiting pans. "You know what this kitchen is missing?" he says as he goes. "Decent aprons. I found one down in the clothing box, but it just wasn't the same." It's red, instead of white, and it says "Kiss The Cook" which is neither clever nor ironic. "You think we should put something else out with this. Bread and fruit or something?"
"That is a shame," Jen says as she helps Priestly carry the rest over. "I know how you like to have your apron." She thinks about it for a minute, then nods. "I'll make a fruit salad," she says, going back over to the fridge to get ingredients for that. "Not everyone likes eggs. And maybe oatmeal, too?" That's easy enough to make.
"Yeah, we can just throw oatmeal in a pot and forget about it, pretty much," agrees Priestly, starting in on the chopping almost as soon as he can get a knife out. "So we've got a system, right? You take the orders, I cook the food?" Though what he's really asking is 'nothing's changed, right?', because this, at least, should be a familiar experience for both of them.
Jen smiles over at Priestly, glad for this piece of familiarity and home they've brought with them. "Right," she replies, as she gets out a big bowl for the fruit salad. Now all they need are some hungry islanders.
