A Change Would Do You Good.

The end of the year is the start of something new. A chance to leave behind the old and start over. An opportunity to begin fresh, to say to yourself, this time, I'm gonna do it better.

It had been a strange month. Granted, it had been a quiet month - even Christmas had come and gone with very little fuss, though Meredith was accustomed to even ( Read more... )

Ellie had just finished up skating, and was walking the opposite direction - toward her hut, of course - with her skates over her shoulders. She smiled when she noticed the familiar face walking toward her, and she raised a hand in greeting.

"Taking a walk?" she asked. It was a nicer than usual day, at least.

"To the Compound," Meredith said, quickening her pace just for a few moments to meet Ellie. "Eventually. In a roundabout way. Hi. You've got skates!" It looked like she'd been out enjoying herself. It was nice to see that other people seemed to be liking the weather. Mostly she heard people complaining. Big babies.

"I do! There's sort of a small ice skating thing going on down by the waterfall that I went to for a bit," she explained. She had been more than a little glad she went over to have a little fun earlier. "I don't remember the last time I skated. I was surprised I didn't break something."

"Oh, you can't be that bad at it," Meredith said cheerfully. "You're still in one piece. That sounds like it was fun." Maybe she would head down to the waterfall later on, before the cold weather cleared up. A change in routine would be nice, especially around here.

"I guess it's like getting on a bike again," she mused. It had taken a little bit, but she got used to it again, so that might not have been very far from the truth. After a moment, she motioned toward the road she'd just been walking down, toward the Compound. "Want some company? I just need to go in someplace to warm up."

"Yeah, that'd be great," she said, nodding. She started walking then, her stride a touch more purposeful now that she was walking with someone rather than alone in her thoughts. "I think a hot drink's in order."

"You read my mind," she said, falling into step a few moments afterwards. As much as she was enjoying the weather, she had to admit that she still wasn't entirely used to it. She could only take it in small doses. "I almost wish there was hot chocolate available here. I haven't had that in a long time."

"Mmm, me neither," Meredith said, shaking her head. "That's one thing this place could use. One of many things, but still one thing. There's no chocolate. No candy." There had been before, a little, but now there didn't seem to be much in the way of sweets at all.

"I still have a little left from Halloween. I have a feeling a lot of it's stale," she admitted. She had to wonder if she could melt some of that down one day to make something approaching hot chocolate. It was worth a try. "I keep thinking if I eat it fast, it'll be the last chocolate I'll ever be able to have here."

"Does chocolate go stale?" Sometimes it kind of weird looking, which was probably close enough. "I don't want to think about it being the last chocolate forever. That's just weird. It's like an island-enforced diet."

"Well, it becomes less good-tasting. I know that much," she replied, making a slight face. She had a feeling it was probably nothing she should complain about, either way. After a pause, she added, "It's weird, you know. I never really ate too much junk food back home, but I miss having the opportunity to have it anyway."

"Probably just because it's not here," Meredith said, shrugging, as she headed for the steps. She would never really get used to the Compound looking like this. "It was mostly pastry in our house. Izzie baked when she was stressed, and she got stressed a lot."

"It sounds like I would have gotten along with her," she said, thoughtfully, as she followed her inside the Compound Then again, it wasn't too hard for her to get along with anyone. It took a lot to make her not like someone. "I did the same thing a lot of the time. It's relaxing when everything else is hectic."

"I think you would have," Meredith agreed, nodding. "She was nice. A little... spirited, but nice." Izzie had always gotten way too invested in her patients. Generally, Meredith couldn't fault her for that, and Iz was hardly the only one who'd broken rules at Seattle Grace, but it had been a serious problem.

"She sounds it," she admitted, as she lead the way into the kitchen. She hadn't quite shook off wanting hot chocolate, but there really wasn't much to do about that. They had to make do with what was there. "Do you want coffee or tea?"

"Coffee sounds good," she said, looking for a pair of cups. She'd never been much of a tea drinker. Setting the cups down on the counter, she leaned against it. "At least we have that around here."
