When Michael had gone into the kitchen for something warm to drink, he'd had to stand in the door and marvel at the complete wreck that was the compound kitchen. There was flour on most of the counter surfaces and there were many bowls filled with questionable substances scattered amid other ingredients and a young blond girl in pigtails sitting on the floor with her back to the fridge, close to tears. Once he could get past the mess and gotten the girl to take a deep breath, he found out that she'd been trying to make Christmas cookies just like she used to with her mom during the holidays. Missing his own mother and uncle in that moment, he convinced her to get up and he'd help her, though he'd had list his credentials as the son of an Italian waitress and the nephew of a pastry chef before she would even consider it.
An hour later, Michael and Cassie, as he'd found out her name finally once she was smiling again, had the kitchen cleaned up and were on their way to baking a variety of holiday favorites, including gingerbread, sugar and pumpkin cookies, all classics his uncle had drilled into him as he grew up, bantering back and forth all the way. He was amused, since he'd never really connected with girls of any age, but Cassie's whole manner was infectious and he found himself really having fun.
"Now," Michael instructed as he handed over the bowl of ingredients to eager hands, "mix this carefully and I'd like to have most of it still in there when your done." He teased as he pulled one of Cassie's pigtails before going back to kneading the gingerbread.
Cassie gave him an indignant look. "I only tasted one spoonful! And you are going to tell me before you cut the gingerbread cookies right?"
Her firm look made Michael bite back a laugh. "Don't worry, by the time you finish mixing those sugar cookies, I'll have this rolled out and ready for you to cut into whatever shapes you want." She nodded and set to mixing. He just shook his head and turned to check on the pumpkin cookies in the oven, a bowl of icing already sitting and waiting for them to be done.
