Elliot had been on the island a year. A whole fricking year. And what did she have to show for it?

A seriously awesome tan cannot make up for the severe lack of sex, babies, and a life in general, she thought miserably to herself. Besides, if this weather keeps up, my tan is gonna be just another footnote in the History of Elliot Reid's Failures ( Read more... )

Pam was bundled up too, intending to head from her hut to the Compound, but seeing Elliot making a snowman nearby was enough to change her course, as cold as she was from the walk up. She lived pretty far off, and it really was freezing, as much as she had been enjoying the weather. "Hey, Elliot," she called, her breath a cloud in front of her, gloved hands twisting by her waist to help keep warm. "That's an... interesting hat." And that was an understatement, but whatever. People couldn't be blamed for what the clothes box held.

"That's a diplomatic way of saying I look like I killed something small and furry and am now wearing it on my head," Elliot said cheerfully, giving Pam a big smile. "You wanna help me make the ideal man out of snow and then demolish him viciously?"

Kinda like all my dreams.

At least Elliot knew what the hat looked like. The offer was an odd one, but Pam found herself grinning anyway, letting out a breathy laugh as she stepped closer to examine the work that had already been done. "Sure," she said, "why not?" It was cold, but the Compound would still be there when they were finished, and Elliot was good company.

"It's very therapeutic," Elliot said, as if she'd done this a hundred times before. She was the type of girl who had made voodoo dolls of the boys who'd rejected her back in high school.

She'd felt really bad when Billy Johnson had tripped over it and fell down the stairs. Except not really. He deserved it for calling me a dorkface, the jerk.

"You do this a lot, then?" Pam asked, raising an eyebrow as she glanced away from the snow she'd begun packing to glance up at Elliot. Somehow, she wasn't entirely surprised, but it didn't seem right to assume, either. "I'll have to keep that in mind while we've still got snow around."

"It doesn't snow enough for this to be a regular occurrence for me," Elliot said. "But my dreams are pretty much crushed on a daily basis, so I find other outlets for my frustration."

Maybe she should take up the voodoo doll thing again.

Pam paused then, hands stilling, lips curved in a frown. "What's going on?" she asked, just a little carefully. She remembered Elliot having expressed discontent before about not having much to do on the island, but she didn't want to just assume that the two were related.

"Nothing," Elliot replied, with a small, mild smile. That's kinda the point.

"I'm just...not where I thought I would be, you know?" Normally, she'd have work or Izzie or JD's little Sam to distract her, but not so much here.

The feeling was one that Pam was all too familiar with, having spent years working as a receptionist when all she'd ever wanted was to be an artist, an illustrator. "Yeah, I know what you mean," she replied, expression thoughtful, nodding slowly. "I think a lot of people have that problem here, you know? There's so little to do." It was the closest to reassuring she could think to say.

"I guess I just feel redundant," Elliot said. "But that's nothing new." She shrugged as she crouched by her pile of snow. "This just isn't where I pictured myself at thirty-one, I guess. Not...this specifically, I mean this whole situation in general."

"Well, that's good, at least," Pam replied gently, one shoulder lifting in a shrug. "I think I'd be a little worried if you planned to be on this island making a snowman right now." She let out a sigh, though, turning away from what they'd built to better face Elliot. "It's a hard situation to be in," she continued after a moment. "I mean, in a place like this, there's nothing for most people to really do, is there?"
