Jack watched Vala play pool with a fresh new face. Lance, he'd heard her call him. It was cute how she was toying with him. Jack wasn't sure if the kid knew he was being hustled, and if he did, he was playing right into it. She was all smiles and laughs, innocent looks and seductive bends. She scratched on purpose and stepped back.
"Ha!" the kid exclaimed. "Now I've got you."
"Oh, please," Vala replied. "Your mom has a better chance of beating me. That's right, isn't it? Your mom?"
"Your mama, I think," Jack chimed in. "On Earth it's your mama."
"Oh, right. Yes. Your mama," Vala nodded, beaming at Jack for the help.
Lance blinked at the two of them and tilted his head. "On...Earth..." he questioned. The way the two of them awkwardly tried to say something as school-yard appropriate as 'yo mama' was interesting. If they needed to clarify that it was a statement from Earth, that meant they were both struggling to conform to the behavioral and lingusitic norms of the planet, a palnet that neither of them originated from, it seemed.
"Earth," Jack said. "Third planet in the solar systam orbitting..."
"I know where Earth is. Because that's where I'm from," he replied. He'd always thought aliens would look like Star Wars, or that they'd be more likely to eat Sigourney Weaver or blow up Schwarzenegger. Not like they'd been voted the king and queen of the prom.
"We're not," Vala chimed in. Oh, this was fun for her. "We're aliens."
Jack chuckled and turned back to the juke box, trying his best to coax something punk rock from it. He hadn't been having any luck but he was determined to get it to cough up something from Joe's list. He listened to Doctor Lance Sweets and Vala go on about Earth phrases, the majority of which she admitted she didn't understand and Jack...Jack tried to understand how Joe Dick could sing in a band that sounded like
the tunes he kept getting. There wasn't even a guitar. Not even on the
House had sung once, a long time ago. Hearing the tune pretty much killed anything sexy about the lyrics.
"So...do you have a mom?" he heard Lance ask after he missed his shot.
"Of course I have a mother," Vala replied dramatically. "She sat on my egg for three months before I hatched."
Jack tried hard not to laugh. Not a being in the universe that hatched from an egg looked like Vala Mal Doran.
[Per the poll--Jack, Vala, Sweets, and your mom. Just let me know who you want!]
