It was early that day when Lucy wandered down to the compound, earlier than she normally found herself outside and away from the house she shared with her sister and her husband and their child. She'd not slept very well the night before, taking a book and a sketch pad when she left; remembering first to leave a note so Susan wouldn't worry.
The morning was clear, warm already even though the sun was barely up. The only sounds that were those of the birds calling as they woke. Sitting on a rock not far from the waterfall, she closed her eyes and tried to imagine that this was Narnia. That the birds might in fact speak to her, or that the whispering of the wind was actually the trees sharing secrets. That the rustling behind her was perhaps Aslan, and not simply Shadow padding along behind her as she was wont to do when Lucy went off so early.
It was the nicker that betrayed the animal, and the small huff of breath that came from Shadow, not behind her at all, but at Lucy's feet. Opening her eyes, she turned, excited when she saw what in fact stood near to her. A unicorn, another not far off. Coraline and she had gone to find them only the week before, and now it seemed that they remembered Lucy, the nearest one nudging her shoulder with it's nose.
"Hullo," she said softly, motioning for Shadow to stay where she was. "I've no apples for you today I'm afraid. Or would you just like a pat?"
[[One girl near the waterfall with a direwolf and two unicorns. Note the unicorns won't go near those who are impure. Please don't make Lucy explain it. Or do, if you're mean. She thinks it's all rather silly.]]
