Veronica raised her brow at Jaye, hands on her hips and head tilted to the side. "You know, I don't think we're in a whole lot of need for glue," she said. "Is yelling at the horse effective? It doesn't look effective." Probably she ought to have played nice and asked why Jaye was yelling at the horse, but she figured it would come out in time. If not, she'd ask later. Right now, it was just kind of funny.
"It makes me feel better!" Jaye shot back in anger. It didn't make a whole lot of sense and didn't make her LOOK very good, but it kind of just came out.
She sighed heavily and rested her hands on her hips. "It keeps looking at me."
"You considered walking away from the horse?" Veronica asked. It was a fair enough question, even if Jaye seemed less than an inch from full on snapping. The horse and the hut, unoccupied though it seemed to be, weren't Jaye's. It occurred to her that this might even be the problem. Softening a little, she glanced away. "What happened?"
She sighed again and fidgeted, her arms once again settling folded over her chest. She glared at the floor and the foliage and the horse, avoiding Veronica's eyes.
"Isabel's gone," she muttered. "And she adopted this stupid horse from some guy who ALSO disappeared and now IT'S still here."
While Veronica had been aware for a long time that nothing was fair, this was particularly injust. Why the hell a horse ought to get to stay as people came and went, she didn't know, except that whatever governed the island was pretty clearly sadistic.
"Hence the argument with a horse," she said, nodding upward. Made sense to her. "That... that sucks." There wasn't much else to be said about it. She was pretty sure Jaye wouldn't take well to condolences.
Veronica scoffed, shaking her head. "No," she said. "You can blame my father for that. He wouldn't let me have one. Apparently the backyard wasn't an appropriate place to keep a pony. Neither was my bedroom." Maybe she'd go see him in the IPD office later, make him stop for lunch with her. As much as they saw of each other, more couldn't hurt.
"Well maybe now's the time to learn," Jaye said, chin high and something like a gleam of SCHEMING in her eyes. "You still want a horse now, don't you? And you've got to have plenty of room in the backyard now. You have a whole freaking island for a backyard."
That was like a trick question or something, because the answer to Does Veronica Mars want a pony? was always Where do I sign? At least, it was in theory. No one had actually ever offered. She arched an eyebrow, then narrowed her eyes at Jaye, head canting to the side. "You don't think Isabel would mind you trying to pass her horse on to the nearest taker?" She knew she wanted her crap going to people she actually knew and liked if she ever shuffled off this magical coil, but she was moments from making gimme hands anyway.
Oh crap. Veronica had a point. But maybe it was a point that could be argued around. Her eyebrows rose, as did her voice, as though she were tiptoeing around the problem very carefully with her words.
"I.. think.. Isabel.. would want her horse... taken care of by someone... nice who would love him and... feed him and... really appreciate him." There, that sounded smart. But once she was finished her face collapsed.
"But you're right. She had about 50 million friends. One of them must know how to keep a horse."
"I usually am," Veronica agreed, nodding. It wouldn't be right. Unless, of course, Isabel's fifty million friends turned out not to know how to take care of a horse, in which case, it would totally just be looking out for a pony in need of love and care, which was never wrong. "And I mean, talk about a souvenir of your friendship. If you don't find anyone, I'd consider it, but... Does he even have a name?"
"You're on the top of my... very very short list," Jaye assured her. "There's probably a Roman or five still hanging around. They know how to deal with horses, right?"
Jaye paused and frowned at the horse. "Um... it's ... name is... Horse?"
Yeah, no, they definitely had to find someone else to take care of Horse. "That's very creative," she deadpanned. "But I'd think so. I mean, Romans... rode. There are totally horses in Gladiator, which I think we all know is solid history right there."
"Clearly," Jaye agreed. "And they all looked Australian and fucked their siblings. So..." She turned her head to look at Veronica. "You're Miss Social Butterfly. Do you know any of her Romans?"
Veronica all but choked on a burst of laughter. "Yeah, I haven't been a social butterfly since I was - no, actually, never sounds about right," she said. That had always been Lilly's job. Popularity had always been an accidental by-product of being Lilly's friend. "But they're probably on Council record. I could look 'em up, find out where they are."
Jaye cocked an eyebrow at her like she might be crazy. "You're all blond though. And your cutting sarcastic humor doesn't really cut. And you engage people. And--" Was she really about to get into an argument with Veronica about how social she was?
"And, never mind. Yes, please, look those people up and I'll... ask. ..Tim." Because honestly she couldn't think of anyone else just at that moment.
