Remember, Remember

The chance meeting in the garden with Jo Grant had been rather more fruitful than Evey had expected.  They'd got to chatting and eventually decided that a bonfire in honor of Guy Fawkes Night was just the thing.  Jo seemed to have slightly more positive associations with the holiday, with more fireworks and less explosions, but Evey didn't begrudge ( Read more... )

Some things simply drew Sarah Jane to their side. In the case of tonight, it was the fire that brought her forth and only a recollection of the date gave any sort of explanation as to why it existed. She stayed and she wanted to stay, she almost needed to. Some days drew people to them, some objects did. A fire on Guy Fawkes Night was more than enough to keep her there and she pulled up a place to sit, simply watching the flickering flames and thinking of all the places in history she could be at this very moment.

"Remember, remember," Ianto intoned, rather playfully, as he came a thoughtful-looking Sarah Jane Smith. He had his hands stuck in the pockets of his sweater jacket and a pleasant grin on his face. "How are you, Sarah Jane?"

Sarah Jane glanced over and let loose a small smile on her face, shaking her head. "Well, I've just been by the nomination sheet and some genius decided it would be smart to second my name?" she commented, arching a brow. "A genius with very distinctive writing, I might add."

Ianto put on his best expression of innocence. And it was very good indeed, if only he hadn't already been found out. "But a genius nonetheless," he pointed out. "Isn't that something, to have someone that brilliant show such faith in you?"

"If the job was writing articles or editing them, I might understand," Sarah commented, hands falling to her hips to press there. "But governing? Where on earth would you get the notion that I could ever do such a thing for myself, let alone for other people!"

"You wouldn't be doing it alone," Ianto pointed out, not playing around now but answering Sarah Jane's question honestly. "And you ask questions. The right questions, more often than not. People forget to do that. And there's a chance you'd actually listen to the answers."

Her lips twisted up slightly and really, she hadn't utterly ruled out the notion of running. She wasn't keen on it, but she had been considering it. "Well, if that's the case, then I should have put you on that list, too."

"But you didn't," Ianto replied blithely. "Which means your instincts didn't point you to me. There's something to that, I think. Besides, I don't ask all that many questions."

"Or perhaps I didn't want you to be subjected to this self-doubt that I'm currently wracked with?" she suggested sweetly with a smile upon her face. "I'm only commenting because it's a possibility."

"If that were the case, that would be very kind of you," he said with his own smile. "And I'm obviously just not as kind as you. More proof that you're the better candidate."

"I am ..." she sputtered and gave Ianto a dubious look, hands very crossly and firmly on her lips. "Ianto, I am not going to run just because you feel it's your duty to batter me closer to it."

Ianto chuckled softly, not at Sarah Jane's expense but at the idea.

"I'm not battering you," he said. "You don't seem to think you're fit for the position, and I'm just telling you how you are. It's entirely your decision, Sarah Jane."

"I'll most likely decline," she said pragmatically and not only because she didn't think she had enough of a support base, but mostly because no matter how hard she imagined, she couldn't see herself somehow out front when it came to government. Perhaps it was all that sneaking behind she was used to doing. "But the thought really is appreciated."

He lifted his shoulders in a slight shrug, almost bowing out. "It was only a seconding, a suggestion. No hard feelings if you don't follow up on it."

"Well, it's good to know I won't lose your respect," Sarah teased lightly as she draped one arm about his shoulders. "And what has Ianto Jones been up to, besides seconding innocent people's names on bulletin boards?"

"Besides that?" he asked, eyebrows rising as if this were a very difficult question to answer. "Well, there was rebuilding Jack's hut," he said, jerking his chin towards the bonfire and what once was Jack's hut. "Coffee. Halloween. Oh, and Charlie has a pet pig now."
