Alex wasn't having as much fun as he thought he should have been having. The day had started off all right. He'd woken up, freaked out, come to grips with it, fed his dog, then went to find some clothes. That was when the day got really good. Julian was having a marvellous day. He'd run and played with his friends and his dog, and had been told that there would be fancy dress and sweets this evening. He'd even already found his costume, though it was waiting back at his home for later, and he grinned to himself as he remembered it.

Keats spotted Alex first, or perhaps it was the dog that got her attention. At any rate she ran down the beach barking, leaving Julian no choice but to chase after her. He slowed to a stop as he drew close, biting his lip as he looked down at the other boy. "What's wrong?"

Alex shook his head miserably, looking up at the other boy for a moment, then back down at his knee. It was still bleeding sluggishly, a very pretty shade of red. He'd never really liked red.

"I want to go home," he said, accent stronger than usual.

Between the accent and Julian's belated realisation that the dog Keats was now sniffing at was Pitti, it wasn't difficult to figure out who this was. "Oh Alex," he said softly, sitting down next to him and leaning his head against Alex's shoulder. "I'm sorry."

"Julian?" It made sense really. The boy had Julian's dog after all, and his hair, and even a smaller version of his voice. "How long have you been like this?"

Julian nodded, slipping an arm around Alex's back. "Since this morning. Seems to have happened to a lot of people. I think it's brilliant," he confessed with a little grin.

Alex huffed and moodily kicked at a rock with his toe. He wasn't going to get mad at Julian, but he wanted to get mad at something. "You would think it is wonderful. I did. I don't anymore. It just makes me miss my mother. And Germany."
