It seems to Lisey that as soon as the rainy stretch had ended, so had the feeling of discontent that had been hanging over the little community like just another black cloud. Now, with the skies once again full of sun, and the island still buzzing with news and excitement from the ball that had been held over the weekend, it seemed like as happy a ( Read more... )

Living in the crash room meant having a schedule because everyone else in the place was on one. It was difficult to keep sleeping when the whole place seemed to burst into life. Especially when the smell of something delicious wafted up from the kitchen.

Everything looked as delicious as it smelled. There was an assortment of muffins and a very tempting looking quiche and a fruit salad. Pacey grabbed a plate and piled it high before filling a cup nearly to the brim with coffee and finding an empty chair.

Happily settled in, he digs into the meal.

Sitting in my lap while I drink a cup of coffee and pick at my food, Flo gets her chubby little fingers around my fork when I'm not paying attention, yanking it out of my hand and sending it skidding across the table.

"Flo, for Christ's sake," I mutter, reaching out to catch the flying utensil before it crashes into that kid's plate.

"Uh, sorry. She's kinda wild today," I say with a crooked smirk, and to prove my point, Flo lets out a loud, whooping squeal.

"That's OK, man," Pacey says, looking up. "Nice catch though. Kids these days," he starts as he playfully makes a face back at the wild tyke. "They just have no respect for their elders."

"Probably spendin' too much time 'round me," I snort, looking him up and down with a smirk, "Anyway, you don't look much like an elder." Baby face like that, he can't be too much over sixteen.

"Ah, the bad influence. You're kind of young yourself to have little kid. Not that I'm the expert on this island," he said holding his hands up. "What do I know? Crazier things, right?"

Rumbling out a laugh, I say, "She's not mine. She and her twin sister belong to Mike Pinocchio, who's off doin'... whatever it is Mike does when I'm not around." Skinning boar or setting traps or playing with his gun or planting flowers. Who knows.

"So ... how did you get saddled with the kid?" he asked, grabbing a muffin and taking a bite.

"Because I'm sleeping with her father, and I wanna stay on his good side," I say with a casual shrug, taking a sip of coffee and then pushing my plate away before Flo can get her hands on it.

"I'm Neil, by the way. This is Flo."

Pacey choked on the muffin, coughing a little. "Uh ... well OK." He hadn't been expecting that answer.

"Alright then, Neil. I'm Pacey."

Laughing again -- yeah, okay, that never gets old -- I say, "I've known the twins since they were born. Been baby-sittin' 'em almost as long." The truth. Or, at least, most of it.

"You must be new 'round here."

"Yep. That's me. I'm the new guy. One of them. I am living with several others of them," he said, looking in the direction of Kirk Lazarus.

"Lucky you," I mutter dryly, "I lived in the dorms, my first couple months. My roommate looked like Al Pacino." And was the Norse god of war or whatever. "It was pretty fuckin' weird."

It was great having the tree house to move into. Dan had been more than ready to get out of the crash room, and out of the compound, especially after the events of the previous weekend. It didn't stop him from having to come back to the compound, for food and showers and clean clothes.

When he did come back, he paid pretty close attention to who was around, and for once, seeing a familiar face didn't make him cringe. "Pacey. How are you doing?"

"Hey Humphrey. How's life outside of the compound?" Pacey was social, but he hadn't quite built the social network to have any idea what had happened at the party--the party he had avoided.

"Good," he clapped a hand to Pacey's shoulder as he sat - guy friends did that sort of thing, right? "You should try it sometime. Privacy, mosquitoes, no indoor plumbing. All that you could want in rustic living."

"Wow," Pacey began sarcastically. "That sounds so wonderful. I can't believe I haven't done it myself."

"I take it that yours is lacking a certain ..." he trailed off, looking over in Kirk's direction.
