Tim's actually disappointed it's not raining. Those had always been his favorite games, the memories of mud on his knees and clumps of grass stuck in his helmet lingering long past any memories of who scored the first touchdown and who got credit for the sack in the second quarter. Still, his adrenaline for a real, actual game (even without real ( Read more... )

What Serena knew about football, she'd gleaned from games caught on TV and, mostly, from time spent with Tim and questions asked of Lyla. Her part in the game didn't require to know all that much one way or the other, though. In what she was pretty sure was the requisite short skirt and high spirits, she just followed Lyla's lead for her first game as a cheerleader. She'd never been adverse to feeling a little silly and there was no doubt she'd enjoyed herself. She had no vested interest, after all, in winners or losers. It was enough just to let herself get caught up in the action. Afterwards, she was content just to wander through the crowd, helping herself to some of the food that had been prepared.

When Coraline grew up she wanted to look just like the older girl. She was just so pretty. Covered in mud and sweat Coraline felt very ungirly in comparison to her. Coraline got herself a big glass of juice and bravely went to introduce herself to the very pretty girl. She couldn't be that scary, it wasn't like she was trying to kill her.

"Hi," Coraline greeted cheerily. "I saw you cheering on the pitch, that was really nice of you."

Serena smiled brightly as she turned to look at the younger girl. "Oh, it was my pleasure," she said, shaking her head. "You guys played a great game out there. Cheering's the least I can do."

"Our team won but Adam said I'm not allowed to gloat about it, something to do with poor sportsmanship but really I think I should be allowed to be happy about it. We won after all," Coraline said smiling brightly at the older girl. Perhaps being attractive had something to do with short skirts or girl bits, but there was nothing she could do about girl bits except maybe stuff her t-shirts with pillows. "I'm Coraline, Coraline Jones."

"I'm Serena," she replied, grinning. "Van der Woodsen." Coraline's candid enthusiasm meant Serena didn't quite understand some of what was said, but she tended to move at a rapid fire pace herself, so she didn't mind at all. "And Adam, I don't know Adam, but he's right. It's poor taste to gloat." She glanced around conspiratorially before adding, "But sometimes it's just fun. Congratulations on your victory."

"Oh Adam's lovely, he looks after me. He's a spy, you know like James Bond except he doesn't have any gadgets at all. Well, not cool ones," Coraline said, looking around as Serena did. Coraline smiled at the acknowledgement that it was quite alright to gloat. "It is fun and he's a boy-a man, he doesn't have any sense at all. Thank you, I really enjoyed myself. Mister Tim is a good teacher."

Coraline was on good authority about that. Her mother always had told her father that he had no sense, especially when one or both of them had some form of deadline and tempers were short.

Serena laughed again. That kind of made her want to go out and meet Adam-who-was-a-spy, because how often did anyone get a chance like that? Probably he wasn't a spy anymore here, though. It wasn't like there was anything to spy on. "I bet he is," she said cheerfully. "He tried to teach me how to play once, but I wasn't very good at it."

"You'd probably be better at baseball or football, proper football that is. I think you call it soccer," Coraline said, you could almost hear the disgust in her voice at the word. Soccer was a bad word, what Coraline played was football and it was a beautiful game. Elegant, simple and fun, soccer was a bad american version of the most beautiful sport in the whole wide world. "I could teach you if you'd like but only if you taught me something."

"Oh, I can play soccer," Serena said, a little excited to hear mention of a sport she was good at. "Or proper football." She grinned, nodding. It was one she'd played when she was younger, along with lacrosse and everything else they'd had beat into them at Constance Billard. "It's just a shame we don't have teams for that here, I would totally play."

"I've asked Adam if he'll make a football league like the boys have done with the American Football and Mister Buck has done with the baseball. He said he'd maybe consider it," Coraline said with a smile. To Coraline maybe was practically a yes. "If he does I'll ask if you can be on my team, do you think your friend would like to be on it too? The other pretty girl, I mean."

"Blair?" Serena glanced around for the other girl. "She might," she said. "She's more into field hockey, but we can't find the equipment, so soc- football might be a good alternative. And I would totally love that."

"We don't learn to play that until high school, I was supposed to start there when I turned eleven but I'm here instead. I guess the Island school isn't too bad though," Coraline said, looking around as Serena did. Blair was very pretty but Coraline thought Serena was much prettier, she wondered how they both did it. Maybe she really was an alien and she just didn't know it yet. "You could always ask someone to make it, I mean Mister Buck made bats so I'm sure he could make some hockey sticks or I could ask Cain to make me some."

"You know, I might have to," Serena said, a slow smile lighting her face. Blair's birthday was coming up in just over a month, and Serena needed to get her a good present. There was no shopping for it like at home, but that could maybe do the trick. "That's a great idea, thank you."

Nita, though, was torn. She wanted to keep an eye on Tim so she wouldn't run into him, but that meant that she wasn't keeping an eye on anything else - like where she was walking. She bumped into Serena without even kind of noticing she was there, and she spun to apologize, her eyes wide. "Oh! Oh, crap. I'm sorry!"

Face it, Nita. You need to get over your... whatever.

Serena reached out to steady Nita with a smile. "It's okay," she assured her. "It's so crowded. I think everyone came out to see the game." Alright, so at least one member of the audience had been coaxed out to see her, flouncing around in her short skirt and cheering on the teams with indiscriminate enthusiasm, but that one was enough to keep a smile on her face tonight. "You alright there?"

"Yeah, I just-" She swallowed, and tried not to look behind her.

Wow, that wasn't working at all.

"Uh. How're you?" Serena wasn't stupid, but it wasn't like she could blurt that she didn't even know if she could say 'hi' to Tim Riggins without melting into a little pile of awkward.
