Alice felt like death warmed over.

It was an expression she was familiar with, having died at least once before, but so far on the island she hadn't come anywhere near feeling this physically wrecked. Her nose was blocked, every time she opened her mouth she coughed, and her head felt as if it had a few liters of extra liquid floating around ( Read more... )

"Are you well?" Marian looks at the woman in concern, her stomach growling. It seems, though she is told it is too early still, that she is always hungry. Bodies, she thinks, do not listen to logic and timelines very well.

"I've been better," Alice coughed truthfully, glancing at the other woman. Marian, she recalled in the dim recesses of her fuzzy brain. Liked archery. Alice had never got around to practicing with her and she definitely wasn't in any state to now. She smiled wryly to herself - her crossbow had gotten hardly any use since she'd received it. She had to get on that sometime. She was getting soft.

"You? I think I heard a bear. Better watch out for that."

Marian only laughs, her hand resting on her stomach, it's flatness betraying nothing yet. "It seems that I am hungrier than I thought. Would you mind?"

She has pulled things from the fridge; filled a plate with them. "The doctors here are a great help if you are unwell."

Alice dropped her gaze back into her coffee cup.

"I don't like doctors," she said simply.

"Nor did I," she admits, quickly swallowing a bite of pasta. "The ones from my home were as likely to kill as to heal. Here, though, it is different."

"That's what they always say," Alice said, still looking down at the dark, still surface of the liquid in her cup.

"But killing isn't the worst thing they can do."

There is something there that Marian does not know, and she is unsure of how to respond, swallowing hard, her mouth now dry. "I am sorry. I do not mean to bring up bad memories."

"Life brings up bad memories," said Alice, looking up and managing, with a little effort, to smile. "I guess this cold just has me feeling a little more down than usual." She grimaced. "Don't worry about it."

"If you would like, I could fetch you something?" She feels that Rob trusts her enough to let her do such for a friend, "or would you rather suffer the joys of your cold?"

"That's-" Alice began, about to refuse, but her head really was killing her and her throat felt raw. "That would be nice," she said weakly. "Thank you. Really. I- I appreciate it."

"It is nothing," she reassures Alice, pushing away her plate of half-finished food. "I will be but a moment."

She is not long, as Aspirin is not a hard thing to get from the clinic here. "Here," Marian holds her hand out to Alice, the two little tablets on her palm, "I hope that it helps."

"You're my Mother Teresa," Alice smiled as she took the pills. She doubted two would be enough, but it was better than nothing. "Thank you."

Aspirin and coffee wasn't a great combination, but it was lukewarm by now and she couldn't be bothered to get up and pour herself some water.

"You are welcome," she frowns at Alice's words, unsure of who Mother Teresa was or how Marian was like her, "who is Mother Teresa?"

"She was a saint," said Alice. "I think. A religious lady, anyway. She traveled all over the world helping those in need." She grinned a little. "It was a compliment, don't worry."

"I am hardly a saint," Marian flushes, thinking of her own misdeeds, her lack of true faith, "but thank you. It is a compliment indeed."

"You're welcome," Alice smiled, hunching over her coffee again, hands curled around the mug to absorb any remaining hint of warmth. There wasn't much.

The aspirin was going to take time to kick in, she knew, but she was prepared to wait it out.
