The mood wasn't exactly great - in fact, it was downright crappy with the weather like it was, but that only made Karen all the more determined. She'd taken on Angela with her own party planning committee, there was no way she would let a little weather keep her from throwing a party for Jim.
Jim needed one more than anyone else at the moment, Karen thought. Not that she would say any of that out loud. Apparently he and Pam were at least on speaking terms now, which was a step in the right direction (Karen liked to think of that step as Jim Stops Being An Avoidant Ass).
With Lennox and Angela's varying degrees of help, the rec room was decorated enough to make it look festive, and Karen even talked Ellie into making a birthday cake for Jim. There was food thanks to her and Susan, too; nothing too extravagant, but enough to snack on for everyone. No alcohol, which Karen had made up her mind about early on. They were in the rec room, not the Hub, and she was sure there would be kids around. Besides, getting alcohol meant leaving the compound, and Karen was fond of staying dry.
When everything was set up, Karen surveyed the room. It wasn't the best party ever thanks to the weather, but that didn't matter. She didn't want Jim to forget that being around friends who cared for him and Sam was better than moping about things he couldn't change.
[Jim Halpert's birthday! Dated to this afternoon and gathering post style. Open to those invited, friends, people just passing through - just as long as you say happy birthday.]
