the like I never saw

The device was most curious, and the moving pictures she'd seen it throw were a true marvel of the isle. Unfortunately, Janet was fast running out of ideas of how to make it do that again.

She knew the wheels should be spinning, so she'd spun them, and nothing had happened. She had, quite by accident, flipped a switch, and that now seemed promising, but all it was throwing was white light. It was starting to be frustrating, but Janet would persevere.

Her soft grumble of impatience, however, had attracted the attention of a bored-looking young man. "What are you trying to do?" he asked, sounding almost grateful for the chance to make something work.

"I want it to make those pictures," Janet explained. "Is it a thing ye know?"

"Oh, it's just a projector," said the man off-handedly, "not complicated at all, you just need to put a reel in first."

"Oh," said Janet, a little embarrassed. "I thought it had all the pictures within."

"No, they're out here," said Gil. He held up a round of metal. "You had anything in mind?"

"Anything that moves," said Janet. That was the whole point of this venture, after all, and she certainly didn't know all the different kinds to choose among.

"Right." Gil pried open the can and motioned for Janet to come closer to look. "See, all you do is put it on the wheel, like this, and thread the end through here."

"Simple enough," she agreed. "And then the switch I pressed?"

Gil nodded and pressed it, and the flickering images appeared against the other wall, with words. Then Gil groaned.

"Do you dislike this- Young Frankenstein?" she asked, a touch concerned; he'd been helpful, after all.

"I don't know, I haven't actually watched it," he explained. "But it won't give me anything else."

Yes, of course; devices in this place were free-willed and quite patient in their games. "Mayhap if you were to watch, it might offer up another?" Janet suggested.

Gil sighed. "It couldn't hurt," he said, and flopped into a chair.

[My little attempt to make up for not being around as much lately... just specify whether you want Janet, Gil, or both!]
