It had been bothering him for some time. During the day, he kept himself busy. There were always floors to be swept. Even on days where it was empty, the little wooden church seemed determined to fall into disrepair. Such were the strivings of man, Javert supposed. They were always on the edge of ruin.
On the edge of night, Javert left the church and took the long walk to the beach, in his shirtsleeves and his waistcoat. At his age, sleeping on the packed dirt floor of the church was doing his bones no good at all. He had years behind him, now, and, as he walked, he stretched his back and glanced up at the stars, the stars which had been his constant companion for all that long years that had had looked for Jean Valjean.
Something had been bothering Javert for some time, and, as he hit the beach and craned his neck, there it was. Revelation.
The stars, so constant, so comforting, so steadfast, were different here. They were changed.
At the edge of the trees, Javert stopped, his eyes fixed on the heavens. There was not one constellation that was the same.
Suddenly, after two months on an island, he felt like a sailor lost at sea.
