"Beautiful animal," she said, leaning against a fencepost, her arms crossed casually over it, her gun hanging safely at her hip. It had been a long time since she'd ridden, and horses, just like dogs, were wary of her kind.
The comment caught him off guard and he glanced up self consciously, having thought he was alone. He left his hand spread on the animal's neck, feeling its heavy pulse slow under his fingers.
"Mmm," he murmured, looking back at the black. "The Dalrei breed beautiful horses." He shifted around, glancing at the woman and the gun at her hip. "It's their life."
"So, you're assuming I wasn't talking about you," she said with an arched brow. She'd caught him off balance, there was no way she wasn't going to run with it.
If the first comment caught him off guard, the follow up was enough to stall him into silence. He cut the woman a harsh look, annoyed at his own embarrassment and the ease with which she'd pulled it out of him.
"I assumed you didn't think I was an animal," he muttered, loosening the black's tack with clumsy hands.
"That's a pretty big assumption," she said with and easy smile. It was almost sweet, coy even, if not for the glint in her eye. One that held a knowledge beyond the years her body would suggest.
"I half look human today," he muttered, still glaring at her uncertainly. He pulled the sweat stained Army tee away from his body, watching her uncertainly.
"Can I help you?" he asked impatiently, going around to the mount's other side, inspecting its hooves carefully.
"You are not human?" Dave said, arching an eyebrow. It wasn't that he didn't believe her. It was just after so long in Fionavar, it wasn't all that impressive anymore.
"I was not disturbed by your watching," he added, looking at her over the saddle. Unspoken was, 'Just when you decided to talk.'
"We're all human now," she said with a shrug. She hadn't intended for it to sound impressive and she didn't really care either way what was or used to be.
For once, Ruby kept her mouth shut. Her look said it all. Ha Ha, very funny.
"I suppose," Dave said. "Met a goddess first day in, wasn't a goddess anymore. Then again, met a few soldiers that aren't soldiers anymore, and that really isn't that much different."
He scratched some dirt out of his mount's hair, "What did you used to be?"
"They die just as easily as anyone else," Dave said, brushing his fingers over a scar on the stallion's side from a svalt alfar blade. If those creatures weren't demons, then what in all the Weavers worlds were?
"I do," he rumbled, looking over at her, the girl that said she had been a demon but didn't look an ounce the part.
"Dave. Davos. Which ever." He shrugged. "What about you? Are they naming demons these days?"
"Not quite," she said, the knife heavy at her side, practically the only one of it's kind. While human bodies were so fragile, so confining, demons could simply move on to another.
Or, what used to be her kind.

"I seriously doubt it," she laughed, "I'm Ruby, by the way. I didn't mean to disturb you, I was just watching you ride."

He looked up at his mount, smoothing down the horse's forelock. "Doesn't change what you are here."
