Things had been very strange on the island for the last couple of days. Neither Lisey nor anyone she knows well seems to be affected this time round, but it's disconcerting enough to have so many distraught people around you. One thing she is sure of, though, is that good food and drink will never go amiss at a time like this, so when Wednesday morning rolls around she's in the kitchen bright and early.
A big pot of strong coffee is the first thing on the agenda; she'll rebrew later in the morning to keep it fresh, she decides, unless of course it goes quickly enough that she has to brew more anyway. After that, biscuits are easy enough, set out with some jam and butter from the stores. She manages something like a sausage gravy, too, although boar meat will never quite rival the spicy breakfast sausage from home. Next she sets out a large bowl of fruit salad - she makes it almost every time she's here, but with so much beautiful produce she thinks it would almost be a crime not to - and then turns to the stove, sauteing spinach, potatoes, garlic, and onion in a sizzling pan until they're cooked through. After that, she pours a mixture of eggs and milk over the lot, making a kind of frittata, and puts it in the oven to finish cooking.
As that's cooking, she washes up the few dishes she's made in the process and sets out the necessary tableware before filling her own mug and picking at a jam-covered biscuit. There might not be any easy answers for the problems currently plaguing the islanders, but a good meal certainly can't hurt, and Lisey means to do what she can.
