Taking over the kitchen table hadn't been hard, it was late enough that most of the island had already eaten dinner, and the kitchen was empty other than the occasional coffee drinker and late night snacker. His own cup of coffee was teetering right on the edge of the table top, a disaster just waiting to happen as Logan shuffled his playing cards ( Read more... )

Veronica glanced over at him as she wandered into the kitchen to get some coffee. The madness of switching bodies with someone else had passed her over again, thank god, but there were other kinds of madness to deal with. Between everyone flipping out and Ginger's death, she needed a break. There were clues but they led her nowhere. They didn't lead anyone anywhere, and there were so many experts on the case. Sometimes it was like there was nothing for reminding her how useless she was here like a case finally turning up.

Once she'd poured her coffee, she leaned against the counter and looked over at him, eyebrow arched. "Playing with yourself?"

Glancing up from his game, Logan leaned back in his seat slightly as he looked her over and flashed a grin that was pure saccharine.

"That I am," he replied, turning over another card. "Don't worry though, I wasn't lonely. I mean, how could I ever be? Whenever I play with myself, I'm always imagining that I'm playing with you, Ronnie."

"Ooh, clever," Veronica said, eyes narrowing in mock admiration. Walking over with her cup in her hand, she leaned against the table where he was set up. "Don't worry, I never think about whether you're lonely." She laid her free hand on his shoulder for a second before reaching over him to move his cup out of danger. She hadn't come in to antagonize him, but it was just so easy to do.

Head turning slightly to look at where her hand had been resting on his shoulder, Logan was silent for a moment before he scooped up the cards and started shuffling again.

"So, does that mean you just think about me naked?" he joked, not quite as witty as he usually was, but slowly falling into a familiar rhythm. "Because I am single again you know, Vee, and there's a games closet just down the hall where I can make that dream of yours a reality. 'Cause let's be honest, what's more romantic than getting naked between the old curling brooms and Scrabble?"

"Ooh," Veronica sighed, batting her eyelashes, "you always did know how to take a girl's breath away. There's nothing that gets me going quite like the idea of doing it amidst the hula hoops and the dust bunnies." By the end, her expression had gone deadpan, brow raised. At least some things never really changed. She couldn't tell if that was a comfort or a disappointment.

"Yeah, I know, I'm a keeper," Logan replied, pausing a bit too dramatically as he cocked his head to the side. "Actually, I take that back, apparently I'm not a keeper. Which, by the way, means you get, like, ten points in the game of life for dumping me before I could try and get you into a wedding dress."

"It would never have worked," Veronica said lightly. "I have this horrible allergy to lace. I'd get all red and rashy. It's not sexy." It wasn't worth arguing about who'd dumped who anymore. That was ancient history now, though maybe not old enough yet.

Logan snorted softly, the sound nearly a laugh.

"You feel up for a game of cards?" he asked, glancing over again as he cut the deck. "I'll make it friendly game even, just for you. No bets, no stripping, just some boring PG rated fun."

Veronica tipped her head to the side, considering that. "I think I can do boring," she said finally, circling to take a seat across from him. "I mean, I can try." Leaning forward against the table, she pulled her cup toward her and took a sip. "What's it gonna be?"

"How about blackjack, Vegas rules?" Logan suggested, shuffling again before offering her the cards. "I'll even let you deal."

"How very generous," Veronica said, accepting the deck. Spending time with Logan in a state of peace, however temporary, is more appealing than heading to the room or back to the Council office. "No nudity and I get to deal. Is that really Logan Echolls in that body?"

"You mean there are other men on this island who'd try and get you naked in the games closet?" Logan asked. "I'm not sure if I'm upset by that or turned on."

"You haven't seen the line 'round the Compound, making foiled attempts?" Veronica quipped. "There's a club you could join. All very frustrated. I think they help each other out with that."

"I'm not putting on a blonde wig and playing Nancy Drew just so some guy can get off," Logan tutted, pretending to be insulted. "Well, not unless he's sorta good looking."

"Only sorta?" Veronica asked, brow arched as she tapped her fingers against the back of the deck. "Your standards are dropping. At least, I think those were standards you had."

"It's not a drop in standards, it's an act of kindness," Logan assured her. "Helping the needy or whatever."
