It was madness, utter madness, all across the island. Somewhere beneath the usual flurry of questions running through Sacharissa's mind was a keen sense of relief. She had escaped this time, thank gods. From the shouts and shrieks coming from all around, she seemed to be one of the lucky few who could make that claim ( Read more... )

It was entirely possible that she, like himself and so many others, had found herself in the body of another and that the woman Remus came upon in the rec room was not, in fact, Sacharissa Cripslock. To be sure, there was one way to find out.

"It seems the island has provided you with a somewhat newsworthy event, Sacharissa," he said in greeting, still not entirely used to speaking with Darcy's voice.

"Although a similar story's been through the cycle before," Sacharissa agreed with a small, wry smile. "There are still people who'll never have read it. Are you yourself today then, Mr Darcy?" Although she and Fitzwilliam Darcy were not precisely close, she was quite fond of his wife and sister-in-law, and had never yet had cause to dislike the man.

Remus shook his head. "It's Remus, actually," he answered as he clasped his hands behind his back, a gesture he seemed to be making with some regularity now that he was in Darcy's body. "I myself had been spared from this particular island oddity until now."

"Oh," Sacharissa said, and then, again, "oh!" She smiled more broadly, but didn't laugh. Funny as it was, she knew that her amusement mostly came from relief. She'd been through it before after all. "Oh, that is strange. Are you doing alright, Remus? It takes some getting used to."

"As well as can be expected, given the circumstances," Remus replied, the tone of his voice a bit more clipped than he'd intended. "It is indeed fortunate these things are merely temporary." At that, he did manage the start of a smile.

"Yes, by the time you get accustomed to it, you'll be yourself again." Sacharissa smiled, amused by her own words. "Literally, actually. How are Tonks and Teddy? Still themselves?"

"Indeed," he agreed, and his smile broadened into one he was more accustomed to making. "That does seem to be the way it usually works out, doesn't it?" Just long enough to get used to the idea, and then things were back to normal.

"They are both still themselves, thankfully." There was definite relief in Remus' voice. "I'm definitely thankful I'll not have to worry about either of them in another's body." It was likely he wouldn't have had to worry about Teddy, at least, as the various island tricks never seemed to be directed towards infants, but it would have been disconcerting for both his parents to be in the bodies of people he didn't recognise.

"One less thing to worry about, at least." Sacharissa looked around and back to him again. One thing she liked about these times was watching the people go by and trying to pick out who was still in their own body, who still looked at ease, which bodies had developed new attitudes and habits seemingly overnight. Were Klaus still here, he would have had everyone lining up for name tags. That the new Council hadn't done so was worth noting. "William and Maladicta are both themselves still, too. It all seems so random, not as if it were an illness you only get once and then you're immune, but totally unpredictable. I never have picked out a pattern yet."

Remus shook his head. "Nor have I," he replied. "One wonders if such a thing will ever be found, after close to three years with no results." It was closer to two and a half for himself, but he knew the island's first residents had been there for more than a month before he arrived.

"It seems doubtful," Sacharissa admitted. "Only it's hard for me to give up on trying to find some logic behind it." The wayward whims of unknowable gods were beyond her to comprehend, she supposed. After all, she doubted even they made much sense of it, especially if the Lady were anything to go by.
