Impromptu Party

Jul 11, 2008 22:22

For whatever reason, most Friday evenings at the Compound were quite slow. Where people went was a mystery to Shari, but after the dinner rush it wasn't the kitchen, that much was sure. She was still quite fastidiously working off her auction hours, and was glad enough to find herself with plenty of elbow room to bake. There wasn't any ( Read more... )

Ginger's not really big on parties, because parties usually end with drunk assholes trying to get up your skirt, but she likes the ferris wheel and so she's pushed past the crowd of people to sit in the grass beside it. Tipping her head back, red hair falling in a tangle that almost touches the ground, she looks up to the top of it, wondering if she can con someone into letting her ride it.

Just once, that's all she wants.

She doesn't know who owns it, though, so for now she's just sitting in the grass with her head back.

Sam hadn't intended on coming to the party, more like he had just turned up to get something from the Compound and when he came out, there was a crowd. He smiled politely and kept excusing himself as he nudged through pockets of people, but instead of heading home, he paused when he found Ginger staring up. "Ever been on one of these before?"

"I'm Canadian, not an alien from a planet without ferris wheels," Ginger points out as she tips her head against her shoulder to look over at Sam. "Sometimes we get some of these new fangled contraptions up there in the wild North."

Looking back at the ferris wheel again, she almost smiles and says, "Of course, the last one I went on was made out of sticks and snow."

Sam gave her a dubious look and just shook his head. "I may be a little slow sometimes, but I do actually have a brain," he promised, wandering to her side and exhaling tensely as he sat. "Would you happen to have polar bears pulled the sticks and snow on your newfangled contraptions up in the wild North?" he asked, playing along now.

"Nope. Penguins. Those birds are talented and no one knows it except us Canadians," Ginger answers, not even trying to pretend she's serious. It's sort of strange how just talking to someone can begin to make things seem easier, and it helps that she has Angua and John around so much.

"See, this is what you miss living in the States," Sam said in a way that suggested he'd had a sad, sad sheltered life. Except, he really probably could run across ferris-wheel-penguins, doing what he did. And that? That was scary.

He was trying to keep his mind off of the whole Dean thing (yet another Dean thing) so he glanced to the ferris wheel one more time before looking to her. "So, any reason you're over here instead of talking to other people?"

"People suck," Ginger answers simply, looking at Sam like she expects him to know that. "I mean, you're okay, and there are some other people here who aren't so bad, but mostly people are just dumb. Or they get all drunk and stupid and fall all over themselves before barfing down the fronts of their shirts. So I'm sitting over here with the ferris wheel and you instead."

"Which is not so bad," he protested, giving her a curious look at the whole 'drunken party behavior' rant. "I take it you went to one too many college parties, huh?" Because that behavior happened all the time and made Sam really glad that he'd only ever done it the once or twice. Enough to know how much he didn't want to do it ever again.

"Which isn't so bad," Ginger agrees, because Annie's been telling her that when she has good thoughts about people -- which isn't often -- she should tell them. "And I'm only sixteen, I didn't go to gross college parties. I just went to high school in Baily Downs, which is bad enough, I think."

"I went to Stanford before all this and trust me, it might be a great place for minds to meet, but it's also...you know, college," he offered, in the way someone who didn't enjoy those parties might have spoken. "Not exactly my favorite place in the world." But way better than home. "So what's your idea of a good get-together?"

"Me and my sister," she admits after falling silent for a moment, then shrugs as if it's no big deal. "We used to do these death scene photoshoots where we'd stage some elaborate accident with stuff we'd found around the house. We got really good at special effects, making it look like paper towels were intestines and stuff like that. Then we'd take pictures. It was fun."

Sam afforded that a fond smile and he stared at the ground before him, glancing over to Ginger and when she was done (and he was sure she was done), his look turned heavily sympathetic. "I'm so sorry that she's not here," he said, quietly. This was their conversation and definitely not for anyone to eavesdrop in on. "I was miserable when Dean wasn't here."

"Yeah, well, you're kind of a softie," Ginger points out, but there's no malice in her voice. She digs her heels into the ground a little, then shrugs and says, "I know what you mean, though. It sucks here without Brigitte. At least your brother's here now."

"Yeah, for now," Sam admitted quietly, glancing around the party to see if Dean was there before he turned his attention back to Ginger. He always, always felt like hehad to watch out for Dean. "Dean has a habit of disappearing on me. It's happened twice now."

"I bet Brigitte would show up here and disappear just to piss me off," Ginger decides after a moment, reaching up to push her fingers through her hair, tugging tangled knots off her face. "How'd you deal with it? When he disappeared before?"

"Uh, well, the first time," Sam started, glancing to the sky as if that would somehow diminish his complete idiocy of acts, "I sort of went off looking for him and got gored in the stomach by a dinosaur," he offered with a terse smile. "The second time, I went camping for a week and brought back a tree to take care of."
