Anita was slowly coming to accept the fact that her birthday was only ten days away. That she would be 30 really didn't bother her anyway. Of course certain recent events might be responsible for her attitude. Whether or not she was happy about it wasn't really the point either. It was over, it was done and people on the Island were safer. In the ( Read more... )

"Hold the door, please!" Daniel called, running to catch up to whoever was opening the door. His arms were full of books, Egyptian history and French grammar, and he really didn't feel like juggling the stack of books and the door.

He was busy again and, despite a minor debate about whether he was going to start seeing people again, he was happier than he'd been in months and it showed.

After a brief glance at the person opening the door, he grinned. "Hey, Anita."

She grinned keeping the door open for him. "Hey." She glanced down at the books. "Could you use some help?" She didn't have anything much planned. "Where exactly are you heading with them?"

"Back inside. I finally have enough to keep me busy. This time, it's research for my classes." He headed inside and shook his head. "That's okay. I'm just heading into the rec room to put these back."

She grinned. "I can take a few." She took three or four off the top nodding as she started heading to the rec room. "What are you teaching?" She asked adjusting the books.

"Egyptian history, although that's more tutoring, since I only have one student, and I'm co-teaching French with Alcuin no Delaunay and Mohinder Suresh." He hesitated a moment and added, "My ex."

She winced slightly. "Well, at least you are getting the awkward out of the way in one fell swoop. Sort of like pulling the band-aid off really quickly." It still hurt, but you seemed tougher maybe at least.

"I suppose it must be a little easier having only one student?" History was one of those things everyone should know, most especially so as not to repeat it.

"Oh, no. The awkward was before we broke up. It's this whole big mess. I'm beginning to think that I just shouldn't get involved in relationships. Or at least take a step back for a few months." Years, last time. Sometimes years seemed too long and sometimes it seemed just right.

"I wish I had some advice, but truth be told anything I would tell you would probably just make it worse." Honestly she sometimes wondered how she managed to keep things okay with Freddy. Probably he got it somehow that she couldn't explain.

"It's all right, Anita," he said softly, smiling at her. "I'll figure it out eventually. After all, last time I went seven years between relationships and it didn't really bother me." Eventually didn't bother him.

She nodded thinking about how a few 'breaks' in her life had helped her, maybe she hadn't seen it at the time, but that didn't make it less true. "Breaks aren't so bad, and the teaching will probably keep you pretty busy anyway."

"And the island." He grinned. "And keeping track of Jack." And Owen and seeing if he could salvage a friendship with Mohinder. "All kinds of things to keep me busy, now. I even have a few people from home on the island, now."

She grinned. "That's new, right? How are things going with them?" She hadn't needed too much time to adjust. Then when home was just about as insane as you could get, or at least it felt that way most of the time, then it sort of became harder to surprise you.

"That's new. There's Cameron Mitchell. He was the head of our team. At the time I left, at least. And there's..." He hesitated. "Well, how much do you know about the legend of Arthur? Because where I'm from, I'm sure it's a little different. Not the legend so much as the truth behind the myth."

She raised an eyebrow but grinned as she got thoughtful. "There was a king named Arthur with knights and a round table, and his sister, I'm a little fuzzy on that part, wanted to take over the kingdom. I'll probably remember more in a while. The truth, huh?"

"His sister Morgan le Fey. Well, she wasn't really his sister, and, as far as I know, she didn't want to take his kingdom, and she happens to be on the island." He wasn't sure what to think about that, either.

"Oh." She shrugged as she thought about it for a minute. "I guess that wouldn't be the first thing that history got wrong. What is she actually like?"
