There were situations that Sam thrived in. Deadlines looming, a major speech still needing to be finished. A crisis erupting at some awful hour, having to pull himself out of bed and into work. Having to write remarks on the fly, all while considering the implications on the President's policy and any potential legal ramifications that could arise from even the briefest of remarks. Fighting a political battle, and fighting it alongside his friends, compatriots in a way. Helping Josh smooth things over to get the votes they needed, coming up with a new way to attack the same old problem. Loving on four hours sleep a night, cold coffee and pastries from the canteen. These were all situations that Sam loved. He lived for them.

Unfortunately none of those situations existed on the island. Hell, there weren't even real laws, not more than your basic code of right and wrong. But there wasn't any real need for them either. No need, and no role for someone like Sam.

He wondered how it hadn't driven Josh crazy already. Over two years of this, the bookshelf giving him nothing but the papers from the day after the election. The day after he arrived. Biographies on obscure presidents long dead. Except, today it had given him something else. He'd thought when he'd seen the title Paradise Found that it was Milton looking at him from the shelf. Of course he didn't have that sort of luck, it was a book on growing tropical plants. When he saw Orchids for Dummies, Sam decided to take the hint, gathering up both books and going outside to the swing set. He liked swings, always had, he didn't quite know why. So, sitting on a swing, he flipped through the books, wondering if the island was telling him to take up gardening.
