Booth had been given the hockey gear when it had been winter, back in January. It was a bag full of the best gear, all there-- but no ice to play on. And now, no ice whatsoever. But Seeley Booth wasn't a quitter, so he just made do.

Chase was pretty sure the dude from Buffy was pretending to be Wayne Gretzky and it was pretty effin' sad, even for this place.

"Does the clinic not carry your meds?" Chase asked, hands in his pockets and eyebrows unevenly skewed toward 'concern', from a couple yards away.

Booth let out a breath, turning to the kid slouched in front of him. "Who needs meds when there's sun, surf, sand..." He arched an eyebrow, grinning. "Why, they run out of your anti-depressants?"

Chase laughed a little.

"Nah, I'm just about as well adjusted as a-" Too much info too quick, and he reigned it way the hell in. Dufusy hockey pretend or not, this guy was setting off some low level buzz in the static of Chase's copdar, "-kid from Socal. You know, tie a net on the end of that thing and you could play a real game."

Lacrosse. Hell yeah.

Booth watched the kid pull up short and his eyebrows raised slightly. "Yeah, California is well known for well adjusted kids." He paused, arching an eyebrow. "A net. On the end of the stick." He paused and shook his head. California. "Nahh, I think we can play a pretty good game the way it is."

"Dirt hockey?" Chase said with skeptical and almost pitying look. "Seriously? Over lacross? No way. I mean, you're literally pushing a coconut around in the dirt. The Native Americans would have a word for that. Lame. I mean, if our ancestors hadn't coughed them to death and stolen all their shirt."

Booth's eyebrows hit the roof. "Yeah, you see any ice around here, kid?" He paused. "Lacrosse is great, but if I had ice, there wouldn't even be a contest."

"Hey," Chase pointed out, "I'll have you know I'm both a legal adult and a superhero. Back home, anyway." He scratched the back of his neck, frowning.

"Isn't there some sort of weird Canadian sports rink around? It's got ice."

"The ice isn't for skating." That was a point of contention with Booth that would probably never get old. Ice that you couldn't skate on?? The hell.

His eyebrows hit the roof. "You're a superhero." He nodded, skeptical. "Impressive." He paused, smiling crookedly. "AND you're a legal adult. I can't decide which is more believable."

"What the fuck does that even mean?" Chase said, looking incredulous. "It's not for skating? Seriously, Canada, come one. What the hell else do you do with a giant ring of ice." Chase angled a totally unimpressed eyebrow at the guy.

"Yeah, 'n I bet you're a world champ hockey player."

"Dude, don't ask me." He chuckled, his face cracked into a grin. "I don't get it. Canada's full of hockey players, you'd think we could find some decent ice."

He arched an eyebrow. "I played in college." He paused. "The army and FBI don't really have competitive teams, so that was about it."

Chase's expression immediately cooled into one of impenetrable indifference at the words FBI. His shoulder barely twitched in a shrug. It wasn't a strong reaction, but the transition from amiable and wise-cracking to this was extreme in itself.

"Yeah, well, football gets all the funding. You army?"

Booth noticed the difference, his hands going to his back pockets. Great. Kid's got a complex. He nodded, suddenly more interested in the little movements. "Yep. Army sniper with the Rangers. Served in the Gulf."

Chase was almost ready to relax again. Except FBI wasn't what went with army. Navy was.

"Sniper? Cool," he said easily. "And then you joined the Feds?"

Booth nodded, smiling crookedly. "Yeah. Needed a job, so I work homicide for the D.C. branch." He shrugged. "Catching the assholes who hurt innocent people and making them pay." My penance for Kosovo. Time served. He jutted his chin out at the kid. "So, you're the superhero, right?" This place wasn't known for its normalcy, so even if the kid was a brat, he could still be a honest-to-shit superhero.
