When Karen stopped to think about it, it was kind of amazing how far she'd come since the beginning. She'd gone from not being able to deal with Jim dumping her because he didn't know her and he and Pam were expecting a kid, to babysitting that kid while the Halperts got a day off to go do things Karen refused to even think about.
After doing the important stuff like feeding and changing Sam once they hit the compound, Karen propped her up on the couch next to her. Remy settled on the couch next to Sam, only relaxing when she was pretty safe and comfortable, then promptly fell asleep.
With the push of a button, Karen introduced Halpert Jr. to the world of video games. Samantha wasn't going to suck like her dad, if Karen had anything to do about it.
"Let me guess- you couldn't find a Guitar Hero controller small enough." Chuck said, upon entering the rec room and seeing Karen with the kid. He thought she looked like Jim's daughter, but with so many kids on the island, it was hard to be sure sometimes.
"Sadly enough, no," Karen said with a small shake of her head and a sigh. "You think they'd make controllers for beginners, wouldn't you."
Turning to Sam, Karen added, "Samantha, this is Chuck. He's the guy you want to pay attention to when learning this kinda stuff. After me, of course."
"We've already met," Chuck said, and he bent over to grab her tiny hand and shake it anyway. "I kind of...freaked her out. When a monkey got stuck to my leg."
...it was a long story.
Karen wasn't sure she even wanted to know the story behind that one, and was glad she didn't have to ask. Sam tried following Chuck, even though he had the advantage of being able to actually stand, and Karen grabbed her before she toppled over the front of the couch.
"No, we are so not doing that," she said, dropping the plastic guitar onto the couch as she scopped Sam up. "Your mom and dad would kill me if I took you back with a giant lump on your head."
"Yeah, probably not a good idea-- returning damaged goods." Chuck replied, and then almost felt like some kind of war veteran, because he was definitely having flashbacks of Big Mike yelling at the green shirts (mostly Morgan) for letting a customer return a big screen that someone had kicked a hole in.
"So, how'd you get stuck with babysitting duty?"
"Mom and Dad asked," Karen said with a shrug. "Pam bid and won Jim, so they asked me to babysit for the day."
With Sam currently in her arms, Karen couldn't really get back to playing, so she picked up the guitar and handed it to Chuck. "Show us how it's done, maestro."
Chuck took the guitar from her, and while he hadn't really come to the rec room for Guitar Hero, it was hard to pass up once it was offered.
"I don't know," He said, putting the strap around his neck, "I might end up making you look kind of like a guitar zero in front of miniature Halpert here,"
He was in Free Bird kind of mood.
Karen's jaw dropped as she let out a laugh, and Sam followed suit, though she probably had no clue what was going on. "Oh, so that's how it's gonna be?"
