It felt like she was on fire.
Burning up, from the inside out and it was consuming her. Gods be alive, she didn't want to die like this, being eaten by some fire, but she knew that she couldn't fight it. For all she'd tried, been strong, been enough, it was too warm, too overpowering and she wouldn't be taken willingly. She wasn't moving anywhere, not until the dreams stopped and the fire was put out.
It wouldn't get her, not like it had got the rest of them. Her people or not, she was better than the rest of them: she was going to keep fighting.
The weight kept pulling her down, keeping her level, drenched in sweat and sleep. It wasn't drowning out the flames, but it was keeping her there, attached in some awful sleep.
There were arms around her, lifting her up, telling her that she had to get out of there, was being taken to see a real doctor. No, she wasn't going, she couldn't leave the fire alone and she wasn't going to see any frakking doctor.
"No Cottle."
It came out more like a whimper than an order and she knew by the fighting voice, the one urging her back that it was Helo, but sun god or not, she wasn't going to let him take her down. "No not Cottle, any one, but Cottle."
He touched her face, trying to urge her back, but it was nice here, a refuge.
Someone shouted, telling them to stand-down, and she didn't want to stand, wasn't standing and she let the ground come to her, crumpling in a heap.
The ground didn't feel like a hanger deck, wasn't metal, but stone, cool gentle stone, and felt beautiful. A gift from the gods, with a warm blanket and birds singing her to sleep.
She could hear them, all those birds.
Sighing, she let her head fall back, releasing the final words she had to say, a real gift from the Lords who watched her. "Anyone, but Cottle."
