Karolina sat on the sand, taking in the last light of day as she watched the sun set west along the beach. She'd been out there since late morning after returning from breakfast at the compound. She found she didn't mind the daily walk, in fact, enjoyed it, though she rarely stopped to talk to anyone. It wasn't that she was unfriendly, quite the opposite, but while she'd been adapting well, full acceptance was a long time in coming. The presence of Chase, Gert, and even Old Lace helped more than she could say, but it also reminded her of what else was missing.
She was falling apart. Each of us had been falling apart since day one, Chase. We just have to find a way to fall apart together. She half smiled to herself at the memory. It was hard to hold yourself together without the rest of your family. If Karo had been the team's heart, Gert, the team's compass, then what other pieces were missing? Karo didn't know if she had room in her heart for the island, when she didn't feel like she had a place in it.
So her day was spent alone, shell combing and swimming in the heat of the day, totally undisturbed by anyone. She had a small pile of pretty shells she intended to make into something for the treehouse, though she was sure what just yet. They were wrapped in a scrap of cloth that had once been an ugly shirt before she dismantled it for scrap.
She was feeling mellow as she watched the sunset, the colors of course reminding or of Majesdane, her power, and of course Xavin. She would never be able to look at a sunset without thinking of the past two years where her life had changed so dramatically.
Karo drew her knees up to her chest, hugging them with her arms and laid her cheek gently across them. It was almost time to head back to the treehouse before she was missed, but she thought she'd stay a little while longer.
