With five elections under their collective belts, it was tradition now that once the election results were posted, the island (or most of the island, anyway) took the day off to enjoy a celebration. The kitchen crew worked for hours to make sure there was ample food and drink piled on tables both inside and outside the compound, and the music had ( Read more... )

He needed to find the child.

There were a lot of things he needed to do, but first and foremost? Find. The child. Before she got herself into the kind of trouble he knew she was capable of.

But while he was finding the child, it couldn't hurt to snag some of those things that looked suspiciously like french fries.

Ainsley nearly bumped into someone as she was angling her way through the party, tugging idly on her beige jacket. She was aiming for the food and she had wound up hip-to-leg. "Rollie, I'm sorry," she apologized, when she sighted who it was. "I do pity the people who get between me and my food," she offered.

"Seems to me we've had this conversation before," he says, grabbing the nearest dessert and handing it over. "Will this tame the beast?"

"Well, I do hope not to bump into you any longer, before you start thinking ill of me," she admitted, a bit anxiously as she took the dessert with eager hands. "And this will do just fine. What were you trying to grab?"

"Is it just me hallucinating, or is that there a basket of french fries?"

He could be wrong. It could be well-disguised carrot sticks.

Ainsley craned her neck to peer in the general direction of where he was referring to. "Those are, indeed, as you had guessed and are french fries," she confirmed. "Should I step out of the way before I'm mauled?"

"You might want to clear a path, yeah," he says, reaching past her and snagging himself a few, still hot on his fingers. "Looks like I was in the right place at the right time."

Ainsley stepped to the side and let out a bark of a laugh. "See? I'm not the only one of the two of us who has their weaknesses," she said, driving home her point with a pointed finger.

"I've never denied mine," says Rollie, shooting her a grin. "It's just that no one ever thinks to ask. You want some for yourself while they're still hot?"

"Yes, please," Ainsley said cheerfully, nearly digging in a handful of fries. "So," she spoke, once she'd swallowed. "Are you having a good time here, tonight?"

"I think I am," says Rollie, in between stuffing his mouth with freshly made french fries. If only they had the resources to make them more often. "At the very least, there's nothing bad happening, which is something."

"So that's mostly code for it's just okay," Ainsley interpreted, trying not to take too many leaps of judgment. "Is there any way we could make it better? I do think I saw more fries somewhere."

"They'd likely be cold by now," says Rollie. "We just lucked out with this batch. I think it's the fact that I don't have a drink in my hand that's making this party a little less than it could be."

"I could go find one for you," Ainsley offered, but there was a narrowing to her eyes, just the slightest hint that she was searching for a reason why that would make the party lessened in his eyes.

"I'm waiting until the child is sleeping this time," Rollie admits, though it's a bit of a struggle. At least this party isn't practically flinging drinks into their hands; it's the same old alcohol that he can find any day of the week. "She keeps trying to get me to let her try them."

"She is a curious one, isn't she," Ainsley noted wryly with a mild laugh and a snort. "I think the notion of a tipsy Karen, however, is really, really frightening."
