By no fault but his own, Jason Street'd waited too damned long to get off his ass and try out those new paths ( Read more... )

He's seen that look on Jason's face before. Someone who wanted to be nice might call it determination, and someone who didn't might call it pig-headed stubbornness; it's somewhere between the two and it's part of what makes Jason Street uniquely himself.

But damn, it's good to see him out. About time, really.

"Nice day," he says, falling into step beside him with his hands comfortably in his pockets.

"Great day," he grinned, using Coach as an excuse to slow down and not because he might've been a little bit winded.

Yesterday had been just fine too, and the day before, but something in the way Jason woke up that morning told him today would be the day. His arms were burning and he could feel the sweat trickling down his shoulders 'til he couldn't feel it anymore, but... it didn't feel anything but good. Great. It felt great.

"Looks like," he says. Hot, but most days are. He's noted the amount of water Jason's carrying.

"Good to see you out." He returns the grin. "Was startin' to wonder if I might have to get Riggins to shove you out here himself." He hadn't wanted to push, because while pushing is something he's traditionally been professionally good at, he's not so sure of his ground here. But he also knows the value of patience.

"I think I needed to work up to it myself," he admitted, "Wouldn't be quite the same if I'd needed a chauffeur."

"Yeah, I sorta figured that, too," he says quietly, looking ahead at the path. There's a few places Jason could go, but there's one place it makes sense for him to head first, because everyone goes there.

"Headin' for the beach, huh?"

"That's the plan, yeah," he said with a grin, almost like he was letting Coach in on a little secret. Not much of a secret, but there was enough of a thrill to it to make him feel like he was getting away with something daring. "If I keep going straight, I've got to hit it eventually."

"Nice thing about it," he says, looking at Jason with a slightly bemused expression. "Well, it's somethin' to see... Huge. And it's different, somehow. Not sure what it is." He pauses for a couple seconds, ruminating.

"You ever see the ocean before?" Plenty of people he'd known in Dillon had... but then again, plenty of other people hadn't ever been that far away.

Biting back an almost sheepish grin, he nodded, "One of our many, ill-fated road trips." He figured he didn't need much more explanation than that. Tim Riggins and Jason Street had been getting into trouble since they'd met, both blaming the other for it ever single time.

"I doubt it looked like this though, from what I've heard."

"Ain't Corpus," he says, which is pretty much the sum total of his experience before this. He eyes Jason again, still meditating on something.

"Might be a stupid question and I'm sorry if it is, but can you swim?"

Laughing, his head bobbed like it couldn't decide whether to agree or disagree.

"The only real practice I got was in the Rehab Center pool with floaties, but I do okay."

He raises his eyebrows just a bit at that. 'Do okay' might be relative in this case.

"Ocean ain't the pool," he says. "Mind if I tag along? I'm sure it'll be fine, but... let me be kind of a mother hen, if it's okay."

"I wasn't exactly planning on taking a nose-dive by myself, Coach," he laughed, grinning at the look on Eric Taylor's face, "Really, I just want to have a look."

He's not crazy... Well, okay. He's not that crazy. Probably.

"Long as you're sure," he says, feeling a certain amount of relief. "But I mean... you wanted to, we could probably work somethin' out."
