Palm trees just don't fight back.

Spike had learnt, long ago, that one of the best ways to deal with tension was a good physical fight. The problem was ever since Faith had disappeared he'd been without a regular sparring partner. He wasn't going to let that get him out of practice, so he still worked out nearly every day, aiming kicks and punches at a palm tree ( Read more... )

"Uh, probably not," Kate says, leaning back a little out of an instinctual hesitation to be round-house kicked. "Sorry, I was just...walking. Here."

Spike chuckled and held his hands up, dropping out of his fighting stance immediately. "Sorry. Just looking for someone to spar with." He grabbed his duster and fished a crumbling, island-rolled cigarette from the pocket, giving it a resigned glance before lighting up.

Kate can't help but grin a little at that. He's got this very Billy Idol thing going on. "Sorry to interrupt," she says, tugging a little on her small tank top. "I'm Kate...and I do yoga. Not so much with the punching."

Spike scoffed, shaking his head. "Never was in for all that 'inner peace through meditation' rubbish. I find inner peace through outer violence." He winked playfully, leaning against the tree he'd been attacking moments before. "M'Spike, by the way."

"And that tree just isn't quite giving you what you need," Kate says, nodding. "I wish I could help but it would be a quick and frankly sad fight."

"Well, the tree isn't really a fair fight, y'see," Spike explained with a grin. "It's slow and doesn't know a lot of moves. I win every fight with it." Okay, that wasn't entirely true. The tree had won one, when he hit it wrong with a kick and earned himself what had likely been a hairline fracture, from the way it had hurt and how long it'd taken to heal. Still, that had been his own fault, not the tree's.

"So if you don't fight, what do you do to keep from going out of your sodding mind with boredom?" he asked, taking a drag as he watched her with a faint smile. He wasn't quite flirting--yet. More pre-flirting, it was.

"Act," Kate says, lighting up. "In plays. That's what I did back home and we still do them here. I'm in Romeo and Juliet which should be happening in the next couple of weeks." She pauses for a second to think about it. "I also get chased by dinosaurs fairly often."

"Ah. I'll have to catch that one," Spike replied with a little grin. Why yes, the big bad vamp did indeed like a bit of culture now and then.

He snorted and rolled his eyes. "Mebbe you should stay away from the dinosaur side, then," he commented wryly.

"Hey," she says, jabbing a finger. "The first time they came over to this side and the second time I was transported by magic. Not my fault."

Spike chuckled. "Ah, so you're just a dino-magnet, is all. Sounds like fun." He took a drag and added thoughtfully, "A friend of mine is something of a demon-magnet, he'd probably understand your pain." And that prompted another laugh, the mental image of the woman and Xander swapping horror stories of dinos and demons and...god, it was just too precious.
