Pricked by the sand.

It was the sort of day that lent itself to taking long walks off the worn paths and playing in the sand without any worries or thoughts about other obligations ( Read more... )

She had gone to the beach to read, and the book she'd found was so interesting that she'd been unable to keep herself from reading as she walked - carefully, so she didn't run into anyone or fall, but avidly all the same.

But as she turned the page and glanced up, she saw a figure in the distance who she knew, even from behind, was Jonas, building some sort of sand castle. She hesitated a little - he was only wearing what she guessed was some kind of swimming clothes, and she could feel herself flushing - but she seemed to be flushing often around him, anyway.

She walked faster to reach him, quite unable to resist reading the final page of the short story as she did so - but as she reached the end and closed the book, close enough to see him properly, she realised something was wrong.

'Jonas?' she asked, coming up close enough to see the needle he must have dug up. She didn't understand its significance, but Jonas looked afraid. 'What is it?'

The voice was like a cool wind at the back of his neck. Jonas broke his focus and looked at Sara. He mustered a smile; a smile he didn't think could happen at a time like this.

"Stay there. Don't come any closer," He told her directly, meaning his words. His voice was shaky He didn't want her touching the tools in the sand.

Sara hesitated, wanting to go closer to try and help him, but she was sensible enough to listen to his words. Whatever the needle was, Jonas seemed frightened of it, despite his smile - which made her more than a little frightened too.

'What's wrong?' she asked anxiously, dropping down to sit in the sand where she was. 'Is it dangerous?'

"Yes, it's very dangerous. Please stay there, I don't want you getting hurt." Jonas turned away from her, feeling embarrassed of the tears starting to swell in his eyes. He could almost hear Peter and Wednesday making fun of him in the wind.

'I'll stay here,' she promised, biting her lip. He might have turned away, but she had seen the tears in his eyes. Laughing at him, though, was the last thing she would have thought of.

If he hadn't been so adamant about her not coming any closer, she would have been at his side without a second thought; staying where she was almost hurt. She held out a hand towards him. 'Come here,' she said, managing to sound calm. 'I don't want you getting hurt, either. What is it?'

Jonas stood up and dusted the sand from his hands. He uncovered the tools enough so they were enough in plan view that no one would step on them. Jonas turned and joined Sara.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you. I was scared."

'It's okay. You weren't snapping, really,' she assured him, 'you were just worried.' She pulled her knees up to her chest, frowning slightly, trying not to glance back at the hole in the sand. 'Are you alright?'

Jonas looked at Sara and smiled. He didn't say anything but thought to himself how thankful he was she was here.

"I'll be ok. Just have to get over these. I wonder why they're showing up here?" Jonas' tone became grave and even more worried. What if this foreshadowed something else?

'I don't know,' Sara said. 'Are they from where you used to live?' She wished she knew better what to do, but she had no idea what the items were or why they had frightened Jonas so much. He did seem calmer now, at least, so she hoped she was doing some good.
