To say that Tim had periodic crises of faith and confidence was to misunderstand the nature of the young man. Over the years, a tendency toward suspicion, caution and analysis had been augmented by paranoia, constant training and the knowledge that nothing would ever make him good enough for the task he'd accepted nearly five years before. As a result, he subsisted on a careful balance of confidence and uncertainty, letting the fear keep him sharp.
The island dulled him, blunted the fear. Comforts were easy here, dangers few and far between. He pushed himself harder as a result, spent hours devising new plans and training scenarios. But as much as the Titans trained, he wasn't sure it was enough. They needed, if not IPD cooperation, then at least agreement that the police would stay out of their way. After a stint in the clinic, Tim washed up and headed for the rec room. Doing research by looking up comic books still felt a little silly but it was the only way he had to study the things that had occurred in Batman's life before Tim began tracking him and he needed to know how the alliance with Gordon began.
The jukebox switched to Enya when he walked in. He didn't even bother glaring anymore. He'd accepted that the machine would mock him at every opportunity. At least the bookshelf was more forthcoming.
