The strange and uncanny temples had vanished with the blistering heat of the weather. While Wesley was happy to see the weather go (oh dear, but he thought he might never see a return to England's more temperate climates whereupon you didn't immediately burn upon stepping outside), the lack of temples was almost depressing ( Read more... )

He was still a boyfriend short, but he had Jack back and he was talking more and more to Alcuin, so it wasn't as if his entire life was screwed up. And, if anything, the last month had served as a reminder that he'd been entirely too caught up in his own little group and, while he'd never be the social butterfly that Jack was, Daniel was never a recluse. Or at least he hadn't been after joining the Stargate program.

So when he heard a somewhat familiar voice curse, he stopped, wandering until he saw Wesley.

"Everything okay?" he asked curiously, not even realizing that it might be an ironic question, considering his own still-casted arm.

Wesley frowned and when he was sure that nothing was about to bombard him from the sky, he cleared his throat and resumed a proud position. "I missed," he admitted, having collected his knife. "But I have handily managed to evade attack from above."

"I wouldn't know the first thing about throwing a knife," Daniel admitted. "I'm a decent shot with a Zat or a gun or a staff weapon, but you give me a knife..." He chuckled and shrugged. "I could stab someone with it."

"I've done that," Wesley admitted, "but really, I've mostly been known for my aim." He frowned, seeing as that example of throwing a knife had been rather terrible. "At least...normally. That was a poor example."

"I'd ask for a lesson, but I think my balance is a little off. I wouldn't learn much of anything." He smiled and shrugged. "My own fault I got caught underneath that...well, wall."

"Underneath a wall?" Wesley echoed, utterly curious now and when his curiosity was riled, it was a rather difficult thing to be rid of. "How precisely did that affect your balance?"

Daniel lifted the casted hand. "I'm one-handed for the moment. Broke..." He trailed off, shrugging after a moment. "Some bone. I don't remember which one it is, specifically. One I've broken before, I'm sure."

"Well, if it was your arm, then it was one of three bones, but there are a great deal in the hand," Wesley remarked, pushing his glasses up. He was rambling absentmindedly as he was wont to do when his mind had strayed to other things. "How did the wall come down?"

"Oh, the room was trapped. Someone set off the wrong thing and down everything came. It's not my first broken bone, though, so I'm not terribly worried about it." Really, he'd been hurt more at the SGC than he had the rest of his life combined, so this wasn't anything.

Wesley winced because he never did enjoy the stories of broken bones or limbs or broken anything of the sort. "I've grown increasingly enamoured with the thought of not being injured at all. Imagine. A normal life," he joked.

Daniel looked amused. "Normal life? What's that? Never had it." Academics, he supposed, could be called a normal life, but it certainly didn't seem like it, most days. And the SGC definitely wasn't normal.

"A trait we both share," Wesley commiserated with a light chuckle. "Though, I'm afraid I'm partially to blame. I did show an interest when I was young. And then I was doomed."

"I was doomed from birth." Daniel had a soft smile as he remembered. "My parents were both archaeologists. There never was anything else I wanted to do with my life."

"No?" Wesley asked, out of sheer curiosity as he retrieved the darts he had fashioned. "I spent a great deal of my childhood wanting to be anything but what my father was. I ah, I had a dream I might be a gardener."

"Kind of like honoring their memory, I suppose." There was a whole lot more to it than that, but that was the biggest part of it. "And then I was introduced to the Stargate program. An entire universe full of planets with different kinds of people. I couldn't pass that up."

"And you said that was available on Earth?" Wesley inquired curiously. It seemed just the sort of thing he would be interested in. Of course, had he not gone to the Watcher's Council.
