A sober(ish) Ford Prefect was an unhappy Ford Prefect. The fact had been stated before, but now it was being proven. He grumbled. He bitched. He moaned. He kept peeking into his empty bottle of Ol’ Janx Spirit when he hoped it wasn’t paying attention, but it had thus far failed to refill itself ( Read more... )

Men. Really, honestly, Sarah Jane sometimes wondered just how they made it from one step to the next and when she found the man on the beach singing, she simply sighed and made her way along, vowing to at least ask what was so terribly in need of commemorating in song. "And just what's that supposed to mean?" she asked, of the gesture.

Ford turned the universe defying grin towards the woman. “It means something along the lines of ‘fuck you bastards in the highly unpleasant manner of your choosing’. Present company excepted from the you bastards bit.” He sighed and looked back up at the sky. “Unless of course, you want to be included in the you bastards bit. Then by all means, feel free to do what you like with my little piece of friendly advice.”

So ok, he wasn't exactly in a terribly social or tactworthy mood.

"No, I don't think I'd like to be either a bastard or in need of fucking off," Sarah remarked, half-icily, half-curiously. After all, there was usually a reason for the shouting and she did want to figure it out. "I imagine, then, that something's gone terribly awry."

"Terribly, terribly awry," Ford said, nodding and closing his eyes. "I almost found myself stating the obvious. It was dreadful." He shuddered at the memory.

"So... human."

"One of those," she noted, arching her brow. "You sound like you'd get right along with a man called the Doctor. He always did like to look down on my species. I always just ignored it, seeing as he complained and complained, yet did love us so. Impeccable taste, I said he had!"

"Met him already. When I first arrived actually. Smart frood. I'm surprised he hasn't figured a way off yet. But in that race I'm pinning all my hopes on the other one, the master of something or other. That one's got some brains. Good taste in music too."

"Well, I used to travel with him," she said freely, which meant she was all too aware of his attitude when it came to humans. "The other one? Master?" Sarah took a long moment for it to click. "Well, I've heard nothing but nasty stories about him."

Ford shrugged lazily, stretching in the sand a bit like a cat. "The type's easy enough to please. Let them have their fun, blow up a few planets, exterminate all lesser races, etc, and just stay out of their way and crack a joke every now and then. You'd never guess it, but your average megalomaniac evil dictators can be some of the best guys to hitch rides from."

Sarah gave a thoughtful sound, nodding her understanding. "I hitched a ride with the Doctor," she admitted. "He just didn't know it until I tried to bring a Middle Ages court down on him to stop his villainy." Except that he'd turned out to be the hero and all, but everyone made mistakes.

Ford shook his head. "Mistake number one. Never try to stop the villainy. Just flow with the villainy. If the villainy directly effects you get out of it, but it really helps if you don't give a dingo's kidneys about anyone else."

She grinned, all mischief and trouble. "I did learn that by the second go-round, but by then, the Doctor was letting me hitch along and I knew he wasn't so bad. Just intensely annoying when it came to certain specifics."

"Like what? I'm always looking for things to add to my future article. 'Hitching With Possibly Insane or at Least Slightly Off Their Rockets Genius, Evil and Not (Dictators, Mad Scientists, and General Evil also covered.)'"

She gave a thoughtful hum and twisted up her lips. "Well..." She imagined the most important thing to know. "I suppose something critical is always keeping a keen eye on the situation. Really, being hypnotized and tied up is absolutely no fun!"
