"We're going to have to talk about your issues," said Nathan, finally biting the bullet and doing what should have been done a long time ago. "You can do things on your own - I've seen you do things on your own - but you insist on this unhealthy attachment to Craig."
Nathan was definitely not speaking to the most receptive audience.
"We used to have some good times together," he said against the stony silence. "Do you remember? We used to go outside. We used to do things besides hang out in some dingy rec room and bother people when they're trying to go about their business. You were so different when you were younger."
It really felt like it wasn't that long ago when they used to be closer, when they used to sit in companionable silence or enjoy some of the same activities. But time really had passed since those days.
"You're still young, you should be out there enjoying yourself and finding your own way in the world. You can't count on Craig to be around to coddle you at every hour of the day and night, grooming you and feeding you and making sure you never have to do anything for yourself. Don't you ever wonder what it would be like to be free of that cycle?"
Muffin just blinked at him, stuck her tail up in the air and wandered away.
