Saffron finally had her own place, and she was damn happy about it. She'd gotten along fine with Daisy, but living in the compound with its lack of privacy had gotten to her and finally she'd requested a hut be built. The building crew was fast, which she appreciated, and that morning she'd moved into her new hut south of the compound ( Read more... )

It was the gun that caught Eden's attention. There were others on the beach all the time, and friendly though she often was, she didn't stop to say hello to every one of them. As it was, she noticed without even realizing that she was noticing, without understanding, until after the fact, that that instinct of inspection was embedded in her still. Once a Company girl, it seemed, always a Company girl.

She waved to the woman and smiled, calm. Just 'cause she had a gun didn't mean she was going to pull it out and start shooting, and there was a school of thought that ran that the best thing Eden could do to get past the fear was to keep exposing herself to the thing that was scaring her. It was too nice a day to get all wound up over nothing anyway. She'd just keep on enjoying her walk.

Saffron thought she'd seen the woman around, but she didn't know her name, so she just smiled. "Hi," she said, waving back.

"Hey," Eden said with a short nod. She stopped, chewing lightly at her lower lip, gaze flickering from the spaceship to the woman. It was still strange to her that there was a freaking spaceship around, but it wasn't that much weirder, she supposed, than James Bond or the jungle changing overnight or having super powers or whatever. "Out for target practice?" She smiled, clearly teasing. Wasn't anything out here to shoot but the clear blue sea.

She let out a short laugh. "Was planning on it, actually. I got a bit sidetracked."

"Really?" Eden glanced around them. "I wouldn't think there'd be much out here to practice on."

"Okay, maybe a lot sidetracked," she admitted. "I was headed for somewhere in the jungle, and ended up way out here. Reckon I just wanted the walk instead."

She laughed. "It's nice out here," she said. "Easy to get sidetracked. I'm Eden, by the way."

"Sure is," she agreed. "I'm Helen. Nice to meet you, Eden."

Eden smiled. She'd seen the woman around before, sure, at parties and things, but there were still so many faces she'd yet to put names to in this place. "It's nice meeting you, too, Helen. There's... I think there's actually a firing range a ways from here. I'm not sure it's still there, though, with everything changing."

"Is there?" She was surprised she hadn't noticed it before. "I'll have to go see if it's still there, then."

"That's probably too formal a word for it," she said wryly. "It's probably more like a clearing somewhere. A guy I know's always trying to get me to practice with him."

"Maybe I should meet this guy you know," she commented. "I could use someone to practice with." There was Chris, of course, but maybe the guy Eden was talking about had some experience with Saffron's type of gun.

"His name's Claude," Eden said, shrugging. "He's probably on the roof with his pigeons." She rolled her eyes. "Claude's not really the most sociable guy."

Claude? The name didn't ring a bell. "More fond of pigeons than people, is he?" she asked.

"Yeah, actually, he is," Eden said, laughing a little. "His pigeons and his gun. He's a little weird. But, you know, friend of an old friend."
