The evidence had been disposed of. The cat food he fed to the roving pack of cats, a little bit to each, spreading it out to make it more difficult to piece back together. As for the tins themselves, he stripped and burned the labels and hid them in amongst the rest of the recyclables from the kitchen. They were probably being used as candle holders or grease catchers by now.
But disposing of the evidence didn't mean that the unfortunate incident wasn't constantly on Nathan's mind.
One minute he was dozing off in front of the television and the next he was back on the street outside of the convenience store, breathing in the chilly night air and listening to the sounds of traffic from the next street over. Only this time he wasn't the one carrying anything. This time he was the one bundled up in rags, and he was facing a 6-foot-tall cat carrying a plastic bag full of people food.
"Muffin?" he said incredulously.
"Aaaaugh!" said Muffin, and swung the bag at Nathan's head.
"No, not the Spam!" he shouted, waking up abruptly and feeling the instant pain of cat claws digging in as Octavian struggled to keep from flying off his chest.
