Everything happens for a reason. That's what his mother used to say. Of course, this was before Jor-El came into their lives. Clark never thought he'd ever resent meeting his real parents. Though, strictly speaking, he's never really *met* his father. His father was more of a disembodied voice. Still, despite the lack of his body, Jor-El was a presence in their lives that was always met with a degree of uneasiness. Today was just another one of those days.
Graduation was supposed to be a happy time. A time of change and fun. A chance to gather with your friends and say your goodbyes. Soon, people would be off in different states or out to the big city leaving this tiny little Kansas town behind. He should be back there with Lana Lang and holding her instead of in the cave, staring down at the column that waited for the final piece of the puzzle that Jor-El had sent him chasing after. The sky was falling and Clark was in here doing nothing except praying to God that putting the pieces together would put the second meteor shower to an end -- and hopefully no one would get hurt this time.
You have a destiny, Kal-El, echoed the voice in his head. God, how he hated him.
Clark slipped the crystal into its place and the world shook. The crystal became home, the walls seemed to be caving in, and all of a sudden there was a blinding light. Clark held his hand to cover his eyes, suddenly bathed in the warm white light. Then there was nothing.
When he woke up, he was definitely not in Kansas anymore.
