Almost a week had passed since the encounter with Wesley. The encounter and the tiny accident that Jill had kept entirely to herself, not wanting to worry anyone who would understand why they might have a reason to worry. They didn't, of course, because one small poke with an incredibly strong tranquilizer wasn't enough to send her body back into the physically desperate place for the drugs that it had once been. It wasn't even really enough to worry her, although she'd spent a few days compulsively checking on the syringe now that Wesley had turned it over to the lab.
There was no way in hell Jill was going to let twelve years of sobriety be ruined entirely by an accident and if she had to take a week out of the lab to get over it, that was exactly what she was going to do and that was exactly why she was on the beach now, no notebook or pencil in sight. She had a book -- another romance novel, the bookshelf seemed bent on imbuing her life with at least a little romance, even if it had to come from a book instead of a man -- she had a towel, she had her bathing suit and a pair of shorts. All she needed was a drink with a little umbrella and she’d be well on her way to convincing herself she was in Mexico.
Of course, what made Jill's day of relaxation slightly different from anyone else was that the minute she'd settled on her towel, she'd been joined by a large pig that had trundled up the beach in her direction. For the moment, his owner and his cranky female pig companion were nowhere to be seen.
"Hello, Hamlet," she said, stroking his ears before she flipped her book open. In response, Hamlet flopped over onto his side in the sand and looked up at her.
"I have nothing for you," she informed the pig, then showed him the cover of her latest book. "Unless you're interested in reading Beyond his Control."
For his part, Hamlet didn't look all that interested.
