She was back from the wilderness and the exploring. The terrain was wholly unfamiliar and it was not Caprica, it was not any colony she knew. She looked on the land with disdain, finding it tedious to be somewhere new when she had a mission somewhere else. Besides that, her clothes were dirty and her impression overall must have weakened ( Read more... )

Having taken another look at the book on dinosaurs, I consider my plan again. The real flaw in it was that I do not know who will be coming with me and how patient they were prepared to be. All it would take was one person not willing to wait and things could turn disatrous quickly.

So involved with my thoughts am I that I do not see the woman until I nearly run into her.

"Pardon me, my lady, I didn't..." and I break off as I realise what she isn't wearing. I turn round quickly. "I am so sorry."

Six grinned, crossing her arms and not moving an inch. "Sorry?" she ventured. "You haven't even looked. Why are you sorry?" Gentlemen. The whole place was filled with them.

Why am I sorry?

"What kind of question is that? Would not a man excuse himself for walking in on a lady in your lands?"

It seems like a polite, logical thing to do wherever a person hails from.

She let out a soft 'hmm' sound as she took a step towards him, fingers on his chin to turn his gaze to meet her eyes. "Only the ones who lie to themselves about what they do and don't want to see."

Her gaze is startling, not the least because I do not have to look down to look at her--fortunately. She is beautiful.

"Would you accept that I apologise because I was startled and was concerned that I had caused you embarrassment?"

"Better," Six acknowledged, releasing her firm hold on his chin and stepping back. Her gaze flickered up and down at his wear and she arched an eyebrow. "And what," she stressed the 'what', "are you exactly?"

I do not understand exactly what she means by 'what' I am.

"My name is Faramir and I am a Captain of the land of Gondor, my lady." I continue to look at her face which I believe she will find amusing. At least I am not as red as I could be.

"Few here have heard of it so I would be surprised if you had. Gondor exists in Middle Earth and we are currently on Earth, I have been told. Who are you?"

It is a fair question, even if not so politely asked.

Stories. Always more stories to be learned and told. Another Earth, maybe they destroyed that one too in myths and legends, because God deemed it so. "I'm Shelly," she replied. "Or at least, that's what I'm called."

She wasn't anything really, just a model, just a makeup of a machine. She could be so many things with so many personalities. But right then, she was Shelly.

It is not unnoticed that she did not say from where she came. I know that some here are sensitive about such things but I've a feeling that it is more than that with Shelly.

She is very curious, and the most self-assured woman I've ever seen; an odd thought for someone I've spoken with for but a few minutes.

"Was there something you needed, Shelly? Some new clothing perhaps?" A forward suggestion, but also logical.

"I've found a smart man," she said approvingly, running her index finger up and down the towel as she stood at her full height. "My old clothing is dirty. Useless. I need something new to live in, to have as my second skin."

He looked to be straightforward and he had a warrior's stance. She only recognized it because she too, was a fighter in her own war.

"Have you killed many?" she inquired.

Her finger on the towel is more distracting than I want to admit. I am shamed, but only a man after all. Her first statement is surprising, and each subsequent one more so.

"More than I wish to think on," I tell her, hanging my head. "I would kill neither man nor beast needlessly. That there is need distresses me. To kill men is more difficult than orcs, even if the men follow the same Dark Master."

Who is this woman to ask such things? Does she know me and what causes me pain?

"I should not have been a soldier but it was necessary and my duty to become so."

Six simply laughed at his seeming discomfort. "You're not the only soldier," she promised. "But eventually, there's no more suffering. God will give victory to his children."

"Some people," she lowered her voice, speaking very intently, "were born to fight."

"God? Speak you of Eru Iluvatar who created all things?" Perhaps she does know Middle Earth after all--I look up in hope.

"Some were born to fight, 'tis true. I am not one of them."

"I am." Her gaze was cold, but only with the sheer knowing that she was made to do one thing. Win the war and populate the worlds with their own, with those they loved and created from science, from humans, from Cylons.

"I don't know your world," she said to him, to rid him of any notion that she knew him. "I know twelve. We're looking for the thirteenth."

What have I said wrong? I have a most unfortunate feeling about Shelly.

"You are what?"

"I'm a soldier by birth and bred by war," she assured him. "I know fighting. I know suffering. But I know that it's right because this is God's will. I'm just the hand of God."
