If River had paid attention to the date, she would not have gone to the compound for breakfast. She would have remembered the cheese from last year, which hadn't been terrible even if it had filled her with ridiculous amounts of love for everyone in the 'verse, and she would have remembered the chocolate from the year before, which had caused no ( Read more... )

Tony thought Saffron didn't look very happy when he came into the kitchen that morning. He couldn't resist leaning around her to get a glass for his juice, accidentally brushing up against her as he did. "Sorry miss. Funny how small this place can seem."

A slightly wicked smile spread across her face as Tony brushed by her, and she made no move to get out of the way. "Not at all. It really does seem a mite cramped at times, doesn't it?" she replied teasingly.

"I would say so, yes." River felt like she really ought to pipe up before something inappropriate happened right in front of her.

She probably didn't have much room to talk, being an enamored newlywed as she was, but some things she really didn't want to see.

He didn't pay that much attention to the other girl, pouring himself a glass of juice. "Feel up to that pool game later? Had a few tricks I could show you."

Whether she took it as an invitation to play pool or do other things was up to her.

She glanced at River, knowing she was probably going to have to pay for this somehow later on in the day, but Tony was just too much fun. "I wouldn't mind seeing a few of your tricks," she replied with a sly smile.

"How do people pay you here?" River asked. "For the whoring. Doesn't seem like a very lucrative business around these parts. Are you doing your other kind of job, instead?"

Of course, her game probably was something other than simple whoring, and this guy had something Saffron was planning to steal once she'd rendered him unconscious.

"Don't let her kiss you," she warned the man. "No good can come of it."

"Whoring?" Tony looked at the bitter brunette, wondering exactly what was going on here. "I take it you two know each other?"

"You ah... Might be a bit late on that kissing thing," the look he gave Helen completely said that he thought the girl was more than a week bit on the crazy side.

Saffron could have laughed out loud at how Tony was simply not taking River's bait, but she managed to keep a merely slightly amused expression. "We do, as a matter of fact," she said to Tony, then indicated River. "This is River. She's my ex-husband's new wife."

River, as always, scowled at the mention that Mal had ever been married to such a person, even on accident.

"She tricked him into marrying her. Like she probably has half the men in the 'verse. You ought to be careful of that, too," River advised. "She might already have done and not even told you."

"Tricked me into marrying her? Uh... no." Okay, the girl had a few issues. More than a few issues.

"You ah, want to get out of here?'

Saffron did laugh at that, and exchanged a look with Tony. "Hardly. How could I do all the whoring if I was married?" she joked, laughter in her voice. Please, like she could do that on the island, with Mal and his little crew running around. Besides, it wasn't like she'd be getting anything out of it, since she couldn't exactly get away with making herself a widow. And she was having fun with the way things were.

"I'd love to, but..." She glanced over at River. "It seems the island's having a little Valentine's day fun. River and I can't get more than ten feet from each other."

"Unfortunately," added River with a sigh. "And I'd really prefer not to observe anything... private." She was not generally squeamish about sexual situations, but the idea of having to watch Saffron in particular do anything of that nature made her kind of ill.

Tony wasn't really into an audience. And somehow he didn't think suggesting that the two of them... Well, never mind. "Yeah. Um. We could... Play pool?"

Really play. Not the sort of playing they did last time.

"Sure, honey," Saffron said, then almost as an afterthought, turned to River. "Is the rec room a satisfactory location for you to go next?" she asked, falsely sweet.

"Okay," River agreed readily, nothing false about her thinking that the rec room was a good idea. There were books and interesting people to talk to in the rec room. "That would be fine with me."

In fact, no. Not the two of them together. They'd completely kill each other. The brunette chick, lake or whatever Helen had said her name was seemed, well, he didn't know. The history they had sounded complicated at the least.

"So I guess it's not a day for strip pool?" he whispered to Helen as he turned to head out of the kitchen.
