Seeing Atia of the Julii in the middle of the jungle made Pullo question himself for a moment. But no, he wasn't hallucinating her, she was there, red hair standing out against all the green.
His two lives, the normal one and this sort of fake seeming one were now colliding in a strange, and almost unpleasant, way. Who should he expect next, someone like Cicero or someone he knew well, like his sweet Eirene? Gods, he prayed for the latter.
"Atia?" he finally said. "Are you going to throw up?"
Pullo seemed pleased by this. Lucius probably would have made his best angry face at Pullo for accepting Atia's offer, but what did he have to bother with being respectful anymore?
"Thank you, mum, I'll remember that. For now, I can't take you anywhere except the beach or the Compound. Or the barn if you're in the mood for cattle," he speculated. "I'm afraid Rome isn't anywhere near us, or a place any of us can return to right now."
"Can't, sorry. We're on an island that no boat can leave. Octavia's here, so that should cheer you some, hm?" Pullo said, looking cheerful enough about it.

She looked like she was going to throw up.

Atia stood on shaky legs. "Throw up? No. Of course not." She'd never heard such a preposterous thing.
"Just," She pressed her hands to her eyes, feeling the pain in her head already, "get me back to Rome and I will see you suitably rewarded."

"Swear it?" he asked.

"Fine, fine. Of course I swear it. Whatever you would like, you will have it."

"Of course we can get to Rome. We must."

"I suppose. A daughter is supposed to be a comfort."

"Want to come see the Compound? It's got lightbulbs."

"Fine. Fine. Take me where you will. Just find me someone who can tell me what is going on here."
