First there were the clothes, then there were the decorations. It was an unexpected party, but not unwelcome. Jo had found the velvet made her homesick, but the feathers had suited her. So she had gone to the party and was eating and drinking, determined to have a good time.

"Jo!"

Karen comes running up to the lady she met by the TARDIS, holding out a string of purple beads.

"Present!"

Karen is so excited she seems to have lost the ability to speak in full sentences.

"Oh, thank you." Jo accepted the beads, pleased to see someone she knew. "I don't have anything for you. I didn't know there was a party on until I came down here."

"That's okay," says Karen, standing on one foot because it feels good. "I just had lots and I thought you'd look pretty with some and I didn't know there was a party either and ShorHor's hiding under the bed um."

"Thank you." Jo grinned at the compliment. "You do have lots of beads, I almost can't see you under them!"

Turning more serious for a minute, she asked, "Doesn't he like parties?"

To illustrate, Karen jumps up and down making her beads jingle, but then her little face turned solemn.

"There's a lot of noise."

"But you can feed him treats, though, can't you? What does he eat?" Jo would assume it was whatever horses ate, except that she wasn't really sure what they ate to begin with, and you never could be sure with strange places what went on.

"Feathers and silk don't do that." She jiggled them about to demonstrate. "But I have beads now, so I make a noise too."

"Biscuits! And apples!" Karen takes an apple out of her pocket to show Jo. "I'm gonna take it to him later."

She grins at Jo and shakes her head.

"You're gonna need more beads than that!"

"Lucky ShorHor." She wouldn't mind living on a diet of biscuits and apples herself. She'd had far worse.

"I think I'll stick with this one for now. There's plenty of time for more later."

"Yeah," says Karen with a little sigh, leaning back against the wall with both hands behind her back. "These parties take ages."

"Well, you don't have to stay for all of it if you don't want to." Although Jo was quite happy to have a nice long party. "There are other places you can take ShorHor where it's quiet, aren't there?"

Karen nods.

"We can go home in a bit after we've found Rollie and Shadow and had sweets and run around a bit."

Jo nodded. "Where's home?"

"Shadow builded me a castle," says Karen. "With a little house for Shorhor and a bed for Puffin."

"Is Puffin a horse too?" She still hadn't worked out who Shadow and Rollie were, but they at least sounded like they might be people.

"Puffin's a..." Karen stops for a second, searching for the right word. "Mongeese."
