He hadn't ever thought about it before, but having a puppy was exhausting. Sure, it wasn't as stressful as a newborn, but having a tiny, excitable dog unceremoniously dropped into your lap was no walk in the park. For one thing, puppies didn't have a clue about things like sleep schedules or circadian rhythms. The past week, Shadow'd seen a lot of sunrises.

They were out on the beach now, with Shadow lying down in the sun, surrounded by holes that Garm had dug. What he'd been looking for, he had no idea, but he hadn't seemed to find it. Instead he just padded over and tiredly dropped onto Shadow's chest. After turning around a few times, he settled down and slept softly.

Absently, he reached up to scritch his baby hellhound's ears before letting his head fall back and let himself drift off.

Just as he was getting to sleep, Garm jerked up at the sound of footsteps in the sand, scrambling up with a yip. Shadow raised his head blearily, blinking as he rubbed at his chest where a moment later a puppy had been.

"Hey?"
