Calvin flopped into the chair next to Sam's desk, the way only teenage boys with absurdly long limbs can. He watched him amid the paperwork for a moment then absently reached over to straighten one of the piles.
Sam glances up at Calvin and does his best to offer a polite smile, rolling his eyes when Ivanhoe hisses at Calvin. "Ivanhoe," Sam says sternly, giving him a Look, which is returned with a Cat-Look in turn. All this is just ridiculous really. "Calvin, hey," Sam greets casually, straightening things out vaguely as they were before. "Do you need something?"
He looked back steadily back at the cat, but then he shrugged and let Ivanhoe win the day. After your house is ruled by a dog the size of a bear, you get used to that sort of thing.
Sam gives him a curious look. "Don't have to apologize." Because if Sam's right about what he's been doing, that's definitely his job soon enough. He just needs to figure out who to. "Listen, were you at the party? The thing?" he asks, hesitantly.
"Uh huh." He stretched long legs out in front of him, and it was a moment before he caught Sam's tone and looked over at him. "I left pretty soon after midnight though. Why? Something happen?"
"That's sort of what I'd like to find out," Sam admits, rubbing a full palm over his mouth again and again. Christ, this is just too awkward. "Did you maybe see me at the party?"
"From just across the crowd," he said, starting to sound uncertain. He'd been drinking with Tyra, and it had been easier just getting buffeted by the crowds than trying to seek people out.
"Think it was you, anyway. Why did...something wrong, Sam?"
Sam is just rubbing at his eyes with a quiet laugh at how incredibly ridiculous this is about to sound. "I think I accidentally drugged myself," he says, a long-suffering sigh attached to the words as Ivanhoe meows his agreement to the event, as if a human being. Mostly, he just wants to be pet.
To his credit, Calvin didn't smile a bit, even though the idea of Sam accidentally drugging himself was hilarious. But his raised eyebrow looked distinctly amused.
"Drank something or ate something or got injected..." he's not serious, but at the same time, he actually means it. He's so thoroughly missing most of the evening that anything could be the culprit.
"Got injected?" Now he was looking a little bit worried. Anything involving needles isn't just jolly party fun anymore. "How does one inject oneself by accident?"
It was nice to hear about Sam's shenanigans, in a way. He seemed to be alright, for one thing. For another, it took Calvin's mind off things.
"Seriously, I don't know," Sam strains the words and then laughs at himself. "I must sound daft," he mutters, picking Ivanhoe up to calm the cat down as he sits back down in his chair. "All I know is I woke up, didn't remember a thing, and I was coming down."
"You do sound a little bit crazy," Calvin assured him, but he was smiling a little bit. "You couldn't have just drank something stronger than you realized? Absinthe or something maybe?"
"Absinthe doesn't cause the kind of reaction I had in the morning," Sam promises, because hungover is most certainly what he isn't, completely and wholly not so.
He let out a breath and leaned back in his chair. Of all the people to accidentally drug themselves, he wouldn't have expected it to be Mr. Policeman Sam Tyler.
"I've come down," he remarks, with just the edge of sarcasm in his tone, with a hint of genuine emotion. Really, the last thing he needs is a blot on his memory like this. Not when he's already so precarious. "Just so long as I don't lose my job over this, I'll be fine."
"Hi."

"No, I'm just..." Calvin shrugged vaguely. "Around. Sorry."
He felt like he'd been apologizing for a lot, lately.
