Once upon a time, Addison Montgomery had thought that New York held everything she ever needed. She had her Derek (who never really was, not after they began to drift and that thick bond that held them together weakened) and she had her work and Mark was their best friend, their best friend. Then there had been Seattle, which had been the ruins of a life, trying to glue them back together. One divorce and one ended affair later and she had started drooling over an intern.

It had been too many changes of scenery with not enough change.

Once upon a time, she had thought that anything could be solved with hard work, but she was tired of hard work and she had moved on from the Jamie-debacle, reminding herself that it had been flawed from the start. The fact that he looked just like Mark. What had she been doing?

She had found herself a tacky lime-green two-piece swimsuit and a thick bathrobe before finding the hot tub outside, shifting out of the wool plaid robe and shivering as she lowered herself into the tub. Thirty-nine, nearly forty, still on a tropical island, and soaking in a stew of her own mistakes.

New York was a long, long way away now. Even so, she wasn't sure she ever wanted to go back there at all. Even Seattle...well, after kissing Karev, there was bound to be issues, seeing as she wasn't exactly in the frame of mind for taking on the onslaught of derision that would come with being with an intern of her own.

So why wasn't paradise so much better than her other options?

She closed her eyes and spread her arms out across the hot tub, sliding down into the water, just enough so that the tips of her hair got wet. For a moment, she debated going all the way under, but she didn't. She didn't.

She kept her head above the water.
