The snow had been charming and distracting for the first day or so and the fireplace had been even more so, but now Jill was starting to get tired of it. All her life, she'd had poor circulation and the frigid weather certainly wasn't helping. She was cold, even though she'd been in the Compound for nearly a half hour already. Her things were in ( Read more... )

"I don't think starin' at it's going t'do much good," Carson said, when he found Jill in the doorway. He'd been spending a lot of time in the compound lately, mostly because, after the first few mornings of it, he was starting to dread the walks to and from New Atlantis. It was almost enough to make him wish he and Catherine had never moved out of the building in the first place.

"Dammit, and here I thought that staring at it might make it go away," Jill murmured dryly, glancing up at the mistletoe again before she looked over at Carson. It was hard to admit, but being around others made everything easier.

"I keep hoping that if I stand here long enough, Denzel Washington will come and help me keep up the tradition," she added, giving Carson a faint grin.

Carson looked a bit confused for a moment. "I'll be sure t'let you know if he turns up," He offered, joking.

"Not enjoying the seasonal atmosphere, I take it?"

"It's, um... I get cold," she offered by way of explanation, although that wasn't necessarily the entire reason she wasn't feeling particularly festive. "And a lot has changed since the last time it snowed. It's a strange kind of reminder."

The last time it had snowed, she'd ended up lying in it with Radek, unexpectedly, granted, but it had happened all the time. And it had been nice.

"That's an understatement if I've ever heard one," Carson said, but it did make him think of how much they'd all been through in the past year. It was actually quite astounding.

"I was just meeting Radek for the first time when it snowed," Jill admitted, letting herself say it out loud for maybe the first time since his disappearance. She wasn't sure she had any right to mourn it, since she'd been the one to end their relationship, but that didn't stop her from missing him. "And you, of course."

Carson nodded, lips pressed flat into a line. To be perfectly honest, he'd tried not to do a lot of thinking about both Radek and Rodney's disappearances.

He leaned against the opposite side of the doorway, crossing his arms over his chest.

"If there's one thing that can be said for life 'round here, it's that it tends to turn itself on it's own head rather quickly."

"That's a bit of an understatement," Jill agreed with a faint smile, nodding a little as she took a sick of her coffee. At least Carson was still there. At least he hadn't disappeared, at least Bob and Mayko were still on the island. It was a small consolation. "I'm being introspective and ridiculous. It's better when I'm not."

"I think you've probably earned the right t'be at least a little introspective, dear," Carson commented. He'd done it a lot himself, after Rodney and Radek had gone.

"Mm, but when I do, I just get detached and pull away. I know the drill, it's not good for me," she said with a smile, giving a little shrug. It wasn't stopping her from doing it, of course.
