One thing Ray could say with nearly absolute certainty about Gus Knickel: he wasn't going to get knocked up. The same couldn't be said for the rest of their desk staff, as they kept demonstrating to him. Not that he begrudged them their kids or anything, not most of the time, just when he was the one stuck covering desk duty because they didn't ( Read more... )

Tony saw the open door on his way to the Lab to try and convince Abby to take a break and go swimming. Realising he'd likely have better luck lobbying some unknown IPD person for a job then getting Abs out of her lab he threw his towel over his shoulder and wandered in, giving the guy behind the desk a friendly smile.

Maybe people were right. Some people just had cop written all over them, though Tony suspected after the past year he'd gotten better. Or maybe cop changed to agent at some point. Who knew?

Might as well get himself off to a good start he thought as he stuck out his hand. "Hey. I'm Tony, Tony DiNozzo. You who I need to see around here about a job?"

Ray had an odd feeling of deja vu about this whole conversation. "That would be me even if I wasn't stuck back here today," he said, giving the hand a quick shake. "Assuming you aren't another one of those misleadingly tough scientists.

"Definitely not," Tony gave him a rueful grin. "Back home Abby flinched if I stood too close to her equipment."

"You know Abby?" said Ray, adding that to his estimation of the guy. He wondered why he didn't already know that; some cop he was. Of course, a rash of deaths tended to take precedence. "So give me your credentials."

"I worked with Abby for six years. Only four for her, but all of it as an investigator at NCIS. Navy Crime Investigative Service," He was used to adding that without even thinking now. "Murder to kidnapping to terrorism to embzzlement, we covered it. Before that six ywears as a homocidde dete, Peoria and then Philly. Ohio State and some varsity ball before that, and its about my life in one neat package."

Ray hadn't been wrong about him - he knew a cop when he saw one. "And you're sure you want to keep doing that stuff here on the island?" he said. Of course, once a cop always a cop, in some sense or another. "We haven't got any embezzlement here, but we've got the rest."

The look Tony gave him said, C'mon, could I not? "I figure I have about another two weeks of sunning myself on the beach before I start needing something to do, or Abby tries to murder me because i'm driving her crazy. Might as well stick to what I'm good at. That is, if you need people around here."

Truth be told he loved it, and he couldn't imagine doing anything else. Even here.

"We always need people around here," said Ray. Now more than ever. "As long as you don't have an aversion to going out and patrolling the jungle. That's the bit you don't run into very often off the island, unless you were some sort of guerilla."

"Definitely not a guerilla, but I've combed a few forests, some woods, national parks, you name it, never for anything good. NCIS jurisdiction tended to be a bit broad territory wise." They usually hadn't found anything good either. "The jungle I can get used to."

"Yeah, none of us are given much choice about that," said Ray, opening a couple of drawers and looking for the latest roster. "All right, I'll talk to Vimes and get you set up. Stop back in a day or two and I should have everything you need."

"Great," Tony grinned, feeling relieved. It likely showed. "I'll be seeing you soon then."
