Beautifully, wonderfully, effervescently meaningless

Guy was sober - relatively so, in any case - and worried. He had looked in the Compound, he had searched all the usual places, but he couldn’t find Michael. Not that he wanted to talk to him. In fact, he rather Michael didn’t even see him. He just wanted to make sure the other was still… well, alive. He had disappeared without a trace after their ( Read more... )

Ainsley was feeling more herself (more argumentative) and finding Guy inside the Compound was like a coup in that direction. She offered something of a terse smile as she saw the books. "Doing your homework?" she asked curiously.

"Couldn't quite find the books I thought would be interesting for a class, but these will do." Guy said, a smile in place. No need to show his worry. "Was rather hoping for a basic study 'How to overthrow a government', but alas."

"Anarchy 101, Guy," she said with a bemused grin and a teasing tone as she eased closer. "You should talk to Josh about that. I'm fairly sure he has about five back-up plans for regime change if it ever got dire."

"There's a difference between anarchy and mere overthrowing of the powers that be." Guy said with a grin. He snorted at the mention of Josh, but didn't comment further. Talking with Josh he found was a matter of walking on eggshells at times and Guy prefered crushing shells as he walked.

Prior's attempts to distract himself after last week's debacle had proven to be in vain - he'd had another blackout yesterday, although fortunately this time his other self hadn't seemed inclined to talk to anyone. (At least, he didn't think so.) That was the worst thing about the whole business - the fact that all his friends here knew just how mad he was. It was horrible.

So he'd started avoiding people for the most part - his friends in particular - but he still had to bathe and eat, and he had to go to the Compound for that. He came and went furtively, hoping he wouldn't encounter anyone on the path, but of course he did. And of course it had to be Guy.

"Hullo, Guy," he said diffidently. He almost wanted to assure Guy that it was really him, but he didn't want to acknowledge what had happened.

Guy for his part had to admit it was a relief to hear Billy speak to him normally - that he wasn't in his madness. He hadn't seen the other around much, but hadn't exactly sought him out either.

"Hullo." Guy greeted back, and though he had taken a breath to ask how the other was, he didn't. He offered a wry smile instead.

Prior attempted to smile in return, but it came out as looking more like a grimace. "How are you doing?"

He realized he'd never asked Guy what had happened to him on Halloween. Given Guy's hallucinations beforehand, he thought maybe it was better not to ask. He wasn't the only one who'd been through the wringer that day.

False smiles were the thing these days, it seemed. "Alright." He lied and it sounded like a lie, so he added. "All things considered." Then a pause. "You?" He looked at the other. Admittedly there was some worry there too. Shell-shock was a nasty thing.

"Hullo," Lucy smiled when she saw Guy walking away from the compound, skipping the few steps between them. "You've books. What are they about?"

She reminded him of a little naive dog, that just wouldn't leave. But right now he couldn't be bothered to bother her away.

"Oh, very boring. Politics. The philosophy thereof." He said, his voice indicating just how boring it was.

Had Lucy not spent ten years as Queen of Narnia she would have indeed found it boring. But she had, so instead she tilted her head to catch the title. "It sounds fascinating."

Had there been a desk nearby, Guy would have hit his head upon it. "Does it? I've always found it incredibly boring." He replied. "But you ought to come to class once it starts."

Yes, he did say that because he believed it was going to be horribly amusing to see her in a class with Ainsley.

Donald was heading to the caves when he ran into his friend, smiling widely, a large but empty canvas sack slung over his shoulder. "Guy. Imagine seeing you here." Of course, he'd have to tell him that he was gathering the rest of his things from the caves, moving in with Will oficially, but he'd get to that.

"Small island." Guy said back, pretending - quite well - a smile. Though his short reply might reveal the underlying worry.

"Sometimes," Yet others you could not see people for days. Donald knew that too well, and sometimes he appreciated it. Sometimes he took full advantage of it.

Another time and he might have noticed, but not today. "Heading back to the caves?"

"Yes." He sighed, almost resigned. "I might as well."

Julian hadn't been sleeping well for the past several days, but he brightened a bit at the sight of Guy. He hurried to fall in step with him, giving Guy a warm if tired smile. "Hullo, Guy."

Guy offered a smile in return. "Hullo." He took a moment to regard the other, who did look tired. "How are you?"

"Well enough, and you?" It was true in a physical sense, at least. He wasn't sick, he wasn't injured.

"I've been better." Guy admitted, which was an understatement. "Thought I'd do some reading again. Political philosophy." His voice cracked somewhere in that sentence, but he made up with a short cough and continued. For some reason, he found it hard to face with Julian.
